7Q Battery Options Thread

Hi Friends,

I feel like battery options has not been covered at all on the 7Q. I would like everyone to help out and put their 2 cents on the battery options for the 7Q. Can a battery pack be mounted on the back like SMALLHD units? voltage? ETC...

Thanks,
Chris

Convergent Design has said they will be releasing a battery solution for the 7Q, but that it won't be available on day one. Third-party solutions are going to be the best bet for anyone getting the 7Q at first.

The 7Q takes anything from 10-34 volts, which gives us a nice latitude to find a compatible battery. I'm planning on using an IDX or Anton Bauer on a v-lock mount myself.

Does anyone know what kind of cable is needed to attach to the 7Q? The website says it uses a "locking Neutrik connector" but I can't figure out exactly what kind of port is on the device.

Below is what I got directly from CD a couple of weeks ago when I asked about battery options and sun shields, the battery part pretty much just reinforces what brazzam already mentioned.

The first battery plates to market will be from third parties. I'm currently requesting images, pricing, etc from them to post on our website. I wish I could be more detailed with you at this time, but I just don't have them yet! Stay tuned on the website for when those post. Convergent is designing our own, but won't be available likely until end of the year.

The sun shade is from third party too, currently Hoodman and Portabrace. Similarly, when I have their final design, images and pricing I will post those.

It is my understanding that all third party supported accessories will be available at the time of shipping.

Hey CD Dan,

Do you have any new input on the 3rd party battery situation? If not, here's a wish list.

For myself, I am anti-gear and I tend to work really light - no rig and just using the on-board EVF/monitor combo so I'm hoping to avoid any V-Lock / Anton Bauer solution. I love the Small HD Canon battery solution / changeable plate system as it keeps the camera light and I have a bunch of Canon batteries laying around. Do you think something like this would be possible?

I found this, not sure it will be to your liking but im thinking about the Sony solution that Dolgin.net has in order to use my Sony batteries.

This option with a "westside AV bracket" and maybe a rod-clamp might be a decent leightweight solution. Let me know what you guys are planing to get since I myself want something leightweight and minimum bulk.

I use these batteries and it would have been epic to be able to use it in the camera and connect it via dc to the 7Q (as I have it on my setup now with smallHD monitor)
Since the fs700 uses 7.2V batteries and the 7Q needs 10V minimum that's not going to happen :(

Damn, that's is such a bummer. For my handheld / run-and-gun shooting style (especially for skateboarding), a huge battery setup + required rigging would seriously compromise the way I shoot. Plus, with the 7Q monitor being so light at 1.2 lbs, but then having to add a giant brick would negate any advantage of that light monitor.

On the small HDs, you can have two 7.2 volt batteries plugged in at the same time. Can you combine that to equal 14.4 volts? Or am I dreaming.

Maybe Dan K. can chime in about combining the voltage from 2 separate batteries? I'm not so worried about swapping lots batteries as I am about size.

Maybe Dan? Can there be a small battery (10 V +) alternative to the large bricks?

Hi Dan,

I hope you'll provide a D-tap to 4 pin Hirose, identical to your previous offerings with the nanoflash, as well as a Remote Trigger, again identical to your previous offerings. That's all i really need. No additional battery mounts needed to add useless weight and complexity.

BTW Fresh Tea, can you tell me how and what cables your use to connect you FS700 to power your Small HD via DC as you do now? I would love to do something like that.

I bought the cord and the dc ends and just put it together with some duck tape. The only thing is to bring the monitor and battery with you to your electricity store so they see the specifics.

Yeah it reallly sucks that the fs700 goes on 7.2V... I first thought I was able to make it since Ive seen someon use their battery on a Sony F3 to a convergent design GEMINI. But the F3 has 10V so thats why.. really sucks...

@ Fresh Tea,

Seems like CD could take your Dolgren Voltage doubler idea and make something similar to it that is mountable to the backside of the CD 7Q, kind of like how Small HD does with their very awesome battery plate mount (although I know Small HD does not require a double since their monitor only requires 6v.

Yeah, like I said since skateboarding is one thing I do film quite a bit, I need something really light. The other day I was skateboarding down a hill backwards while holding my FS700, praying I wouldn't fall and smash my camera into 2 pieces; so it's already precarious as it is.

Haha, nice! Im a dancer but me on a skateboard is just a sad sight... Id actually like to film some skate, but skate isnt big enough here. I film a lot of dance so I might not be as restricted as you are on a skateboard but Im feeling you...

Yeah but even if they could, you would have to wait until at-least the end of the year for them to release it.. ugh, cant wait that long.. Im thinking on buying Dolgren solution meanwhile and then maybe later if there comes a better solution...

For your Dolgren solution, you might be able to just use industrial strength Velcro and Velcro it to the the back of the 7Q, that's what I do for my MX 2 Mototrized dolly controller. I have the battery pack velcroed to the back of the controller and it sticks really, really well.

I'm going to optimistic in hopes that a non-brick / V-Lock solution will be released.

velcro, really? if I can find a good one here I will def try! Thanks for the heads up!

Hey Fresh Tea,

I just noticed that the back of the 7Q is a series of gaps so not sure if Velcro would work, but that stuff is super strong though. I used to Velcro the very large and heavy batteries to the side of my circa 1975 Eclair ACL super 16mm camera and they never even slightly budged. I had to pull hard to take the batteries off.

i would imagine filming dance is like filming skateboarding in that you need to be super mobile and light.

I'm sure a good, simple solution will come up.

To clarify a few points here, our solution http://dolgin.net/zen_dolgin/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4&products_id=54 is most likely to be able to provide sufficient power to 7Q as the vDoubler-SPL is capable of delivering up to 2A at 12V. It is still to be tested as 7Q will periodically ask for high power for some short periods of time loading a 7.2V DV battery above its comfort level. As far as a mounting solution, 7Q equipped with a IDX back will take our V lock configuration (the V bracket image is shown at the very bottom of the product page).
Also, if you happen to own a BP-U60 battery (or a SWIT version of it) than our EX-V adapter would be a clean and reliable solution as it puts out 12V natively
