FS7: 7Q+ and UHD problems

I'm just experimenting to see if I can record UHD from the FS7 HDMI to the Odyssey 7Q+. I have the latest software on the Odyssey.
First question - When I set it up at first the Odyssey took a few minutes to "download UHD" ? what was that about , downloading from the camera?
Second question - I don't get any sync on the image, it just keeps moving across to the right and blanking out over and over again. I set the Odyssey up to FS7 UHD , and set the output menus on the camera to HDMI UHD

First off, the 3-4 minutes it took to load the UHD was the Odyssey loading in a new program that is for using an UHD video input signal for recording to Apple ProRes. The Odyssey7Q+ can hold two programs at any given time, so switching between them just takes a few seconds. Loading a new program takes a few minutes but then you can quickly switch between two loaded programs again.

There are a few possibilities why you had some issues with the signal. The one that always comes first is that the HDMI cable you're using isn't up to snuff for carrying an UHD signal. This is the cause of about 80% of the problems people report to us -- bad cables. Or maybe a good cable but then it is paired with a right angle adapter or connector adapter from Full to Mini or the like. Every adapter means at least 3db signal loss, and this can be enough to cause issues. My personal preference is for the Sanho HyperThin HDMI cables. Very good, very thin and very pliable. Thick HDMI cables put pressure on the connectors and can pull themselves out of the socket.

If that's not it, be sure that you have the camera set to an acceptable frame rate. The Odyssey7Q+ can accept UHD (3840x2160) over HDMI at 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, and 30 frames per second. If the signal was actually DCI 4K (4096x2160) then the available frame rates over HDMI are 23.98 and 24 frames per second.

Lastly, it can't hurt to do a Factory Reset on the Odyssey. This is something we suggest after a firmware update as some old settings that are no longer relevant in the new firmware somehow get buried down inside the code and cause odd things to happen. A quick reset clears that all out.

Give those a try and if the problem is not fixed feel free to contact me directly or to reach out to the techs at cdsupport@convergent-design.com.

Thanks so much Mitch. Indeed I had forgotten to do the factory reset after upgrading the software. That plus a little fiddling with the HDMI cables ( god I hate HDMI) and it worked. Mystery solved. So glad you're on the forum for us.

And this my friends, is just one of the many reasons to consider Convergent Design's Odyssey 7Q+ when making a move to a monitor/recorder system--customer support. Show me ANY other company with this amount of immediate customer support--and customer support with valid answers.

2nd that . After dealing with promises that never happen from Small HD and problems that remained unexplained from Atomos I felt that Convergence would be totally reliable and that's proven to be more than true.
I don't mean to bad mouth the other guys, just that Convergence seems to be an outstanding operation.
