7D upgrade to 5D II stopped by lack of lens choice?

This may sound crazy.

I have two 1.6x crops in the 60D and 7D. I want to trade up my 7D to get a 5D to get wider, as the 1.6x crop is killing any hopes of wide angle photo/video.

So I figured I would upgrade the 7D to a 5DMKII. But then.... hold up. I've been spoiled.

My 17-55 f/2.8 IS is a gem. Great copy. So crisp for video and photo. But... this puppy won't fit the 5DMKII. And I'm going to be putting my 55-150 f/2.8 on the 60D for the added reach.

I basically want a wide, fast zoom with 2.8 and IS. (Run and gun type video work, wedding video, sports shooting, etc.)

So the Canon options are:

24-70 f/2.8
16-35mm f/2.8
17-40 f/4
24-105 f/4 IS

So.... the only IS is the f/4. No 2.8 with IS.

I know this is a common issue w/ people who have the 17-55 f/2.8 upgrading to a FF.

So.....for those who have made the jump.. which lens did you choose? Did you regret the decision? Any third party fit the gap? (I've been real happy with my Sigma 55-150 f/2.8)

I was leaning toward the 24-105 f/4 IS (which is technically both wider and longer than the 17-55 on crop). However, would the f/4 be a deal-breaker in low-light compared to the 17-55 f/2.8?

Thanks for the feedback....

Here's the question I'm TRYING to ask (hopefully I can explain this logically)
I'm just trying to see which combination works better for low light -- the 7D w/ the 17-55 f/2.8 or the 5D with the 24-105.
5D > 7D in terms of low light
17-55 f/2.8 > 24-105 f/4 in terms of low light.
So..... is 7D+17/55 at f/2.8 = or > or < than 5D MKII w/24-105 at f/4?
That's what I'm essentially trying to figure out.

I'm far from an expert, but I'm pretty sure that in their usable ranges there is basically no difference in the light sensitivity...I mean, who needs to shoot video at an ISO over 1000 or so? Especially if you are trying to avoid the digital noise that comes at higher settings. If you want to get a wider range out of the crop sensor why not get a shorter lens? I think the bottom line is that you are going to need light no matter what to get a decent image...

Over ISO 1,000? A lot. Probably 1/3 of the stuff I shoot is in 1250. And I know a lot of people shoot up to 1,600.

So basically what I said? Without knowing what exactly you mean by low light it's hard to gauge and answer.

I'm just trying to figure out which body/lens combo will give you the best low light performance, hands down. Does the added light stops of the full-frame 5D go farther, or the 2.8 of the 17-55.

Wide open aperture. Same shutter. On a tripod. Low-light. 7D with the 17 f/2.8 or the 5DMKII with the 24-105 f/4.

That's the question.

I guess I'm not sure...though I am confused by your second lens choice...24-105 f/4? You do get a couple stops of breathing room with the full frame, but at f/4 I don't really see the advantage. Why not get yourself something with a wider apeture?

You should remember that the 5 is less noisy at higher ISO and has less DOF, therefore, the 24-105 functions farily well

You could forget your issue and just shoot the 17-55 on your 1.6 body and use the 5d for wide applications

When I shoot single camera I nearly always pick the 5d/24-105

When Im on a bigger shoot I use the 7d as the A cam on sticks and the 5d floats about doing B cam oftern with a 28 or a 14

I use the 24-105/4 and its a really good everyday lense. I wont miss it. If you take the 16-35/2,8 additional I think its a good choice, with this focus you dont need the IS absolutly and its nice to have a 2,8 lense.
I have the old 17-35/2,8 without IS and it works fine. I often was happy to have the 2,8.
Although the 5D MKII has very good lowlight capabilities.

The 5d mk II is about a stop faster than the 7d so the 24-105 at f4 on the 5d will give you similar low performance as the 7d with the 17-55 at f2.8. The 24-105 on the 5d is not that much wider than the 17-55 on the 7d. If you are shooting video I would not consider the 5d an upgrade
The 5d has no 60/50p
Wide angle lenses will have more distortion and will vignette more on the 5d
the 5d suffers more moire and aliasing
You can't use efs lenses
Also you would be limited with the old manual lenses you can use because the 5d has a better mirror than the 7d
Because the 5d has more swallow dof focusing is more difficult
The 5d is not full weather proof
Save yourself money and just buy wider lenses for the cameras you already have

I mean, who needs to shoot video at an ISO over 1000 or so?

How many situations would you like me to post shots of where I can't add light and it's too dark to shoot at anything below 1250, and sometimes 2000? It happens all the time.

Not every one making films has the luxury of lighting crews and retakes.

In terms of 7D+F2.8 vs 5D+F4 I'd probably take the 7D if you can shoot at rational ISO. I really think F4 is too slow in low light, Image Stabilizer or not. I'm often in situations where I'm shooting high ISO 1250,1600,2000, 2500 with f1.4, so clearly F4 wouldn't cut it. If you aren't in those sorts of situations then F4 may be fast enough for you. There is no 'hands down' best, because it always 'depends'.

Given the same glass, I can shoot the 5D2 @ ISO2000 and get the same (or less) noise that the 7D gets at ISO1250. There is no substitute for having more tools in the box, but sometimes you just have to work with the tools you already have. I wouldn't even contemplate giving up an f2.8 lens for an f4 lens if low light was a concern, just like I wouldn't consider giving up a f1.4 for a f2.8.

According to my tests the 5D behaves better with regards to color aliasing on a resolution chart side by side with a 7D using the same lenses.

The 11-16 Tokina f2.8 I bought for my 7D will give you a much wider fov even at 15mm on the 5D than at 11mm on the 7D.

Goto canon rumors, its a pretty for sure bet at this point that the 24-70 f/2.8 IS is going to be released at the next photo convention.

the original 24-70 F2.8 is amazing and lack of IS is not a deal breaker using it for video. I shoot more with 24mm F1.4 II L on my 5D for wide shots. Using this lens is like taking a lighting crew on every low light shoot. I used to shoot with my zooms but now would rather switch between 24 to 50mm zeiss to get coverage in Low light. You wont be sorry...
