77mm Heliopan variable ND filter + step up ring on Nikon 20mm f/2.8 AIS lens.

i doubt it will. at 17 on my 17-50, with my 77mm nd filter and a step up ring there is no vignette

That's interesting - my kit lens with the same step up ring to the 77mm Heliopan DOES slightly vignette at full wide...

Which step ring do you have....is it the thin Tiffin one? That's the one I have and it works perfect with the kit lens, UNLESS you put one
of those rubber sunshades on, then it goes:
'kit lens. 67 to 77 step ring, sunshade, heliopan' and that puts the heliopan out far enough that it vignettes a little at 18mm.
When I screw the heliopan into the 67-77 step ring directly, I don't get vignetting at 18mm, so not sure what is happening here.
I am guessing it may have something to do with the particular step rings a person has, but if you have the same step ring
as me, I'm not sure.
 
Okay thanks everyone. I was going to get the solid Heliopan step up ring but I might buy the thin Tiffin one...

My rings are of the Marumi brand (made in Japan), and are very thin - how thick are Tiffens?
