75Mbps GH1 Peak Performance Patch

Typical selfish and thoughtless behaviour from lpowell -

- releasing exciting new settings at the beginning of the week so I have to wait all the way 'till the weekend before work allows me to get my camera out in the daylight and see the results.

Seriously, thanks once more for your work and dedication in bringing these improvements to the GH1 (and others). I look forward to checking out that hi rate FHD on pans and movement. Slurp.

Interestingly, I found a flaw in the GH2 last night. I am able to reliably reproduce a scenario where the GH2 fails to write to a high speed Class 10 card in 720p @ 60 FPS mode. It fails with the write speed error. This may be our opportunity to get a firmware update for the GH2! I will try to post a video showing the issue.

That happened to me also. I was shooting B&W with the GH2 at 720p 60fps and it had a write error. Bright sunny day panning an airplane taking off with a very busy background and at 1/125fps. I haven't had a chance to contact Panasonic yet.

tested the new lpowell patch today, unfortunately speed write errors and a bit of frame skipping plagued 1080 FHD for me, i was shooting foliage, grass, branches, very high detail shots trying to see how far it could be pushed, recorded for 1 second then speed write error appeared :o( it worked on everything else tho but i didn't have any luck on high detail. (Panasonic 8GB Class 10 card)

720 SH was error free and seemed unstoppable, handled very high detail scenes and quick motion with ease.

i had great success the previous day with near error free shooting and average bitrates of around 48Mbps/sec on high detailed scenes using a slightly modified lpowell 40Mbps high reliability patch & 35Mbps Mjpeg in camera patch (J button within ptool)

i changed the AVCHD to...
FHD/SH 60
H 50
L 32
OVERALL 62
GOP unchanged

i dont really know what i'm doing with all the numbers but i tried those above on the lpowell J button patches within ptool and seemed pretty good, maybes lpowell can shed some light on if they are good or if they have hidden flaws i'm not picking up on.

anyways peace and great patches lpowell

i uploaded the MTS file if anyone wants to download and check quality (vimeo playback is awful!)

Getting the same problem as you terra1 on 1080 FHD with this hack on high detailed scenes.

yeah Kingswell FHD 1080 totally wasn't happening for me, instant lock up on high detail scenes, 720 was unstoppable i have to say
i've reverted to my previous .bin file for now as i'm loving shooting FHD, and the settings i'm using seem to be getting me bitrates averaging 48Mbps on high detail, very rare speed errors yet occasional frame jumping (found it in 2 clips out of 50ish) i think i'm happier with frame skipping than speed errors as instant speed errors make me wanna cry.

Thanks, terra1 and Kingswell, for the tips on producing recording failures in 1080p FHD mode. I was able to reproduce this behavior on my GH1 under the following conditions:

* FHD mode, shutter 1/60, tripod mounted.
* Sandisk Extreme 30MB/s 16GB SD card.
* Direct sunlight, sharp focus, dense foliage.

The recording failure is sporatic, and when it happens, it almost always occurs at the starting key frame of the fifth GOP in the video stream. However, the video file looks fine and there is no evidence of any error in the preceding frames. Once the camera makes it safely beyond the fifth GOP, it appears to continue recording in a reliable manner.

To address this problem, I've updated the patch settings with adjustments to increase the stability of 1080p recording at high bitrates. This update is available for download at the bottom of the initial post of this thread:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...rmance-Patch&p=2222557&viewfull=1#post2222557

However, I haven't had time yet to do exhaustive testing of the updated patch to determine optimal values of all settings. I'd appreciate any assistance other dvxusers may be able to provide in testing the range of possible values. In this case, I have a high confidence level in all patch settings except the following:

Patches for testers / AVCHD Movie Mode / AVCHD Research
Constant for 1080p: 3888000

This is the highest value I have tested for this setting and it appears to produce the most resilient results in 1080p. However, valid values for this patch can range up to around 10,000,000. Thorough testing requires a freshly formatted Class 10 SD card, tripod mounting, direct sunlight, dense foliage, sharp focus, and repeated recording attempts of at least 8 seconds each. I'm currently seeing the failure occur on about 15% of my takes, and always within the first few seconds. (That is, 15% of highly detailed, high bitrate shots. In less demanding circumstances, I've seen no problems with recording 1080p videos.)

Thanks for your help and enthusiasm, and do feel free to report your results in this thread.

Thanks for your fine work lpowell. I have tried your latest patch with success. I find the 720p outstanding and it even plays in the camera. The 1080 does not play in the camera, but has not failed for me yet... Al

Hi lpowell-Exactly what happened in my scenario. I remember it being so bright that i had to break out some NDs (strange for January in the UK) and i was recording some nice foliage in my back garden.

Not so bright today but i'll retry today with your original settings and new ones you've kindly posted with more rigorous testing methods.

Andy

Managed to get some time to test the new settings.

-1080FHD mode, shutter 1/60 24p, and 1/50 25p tripod mounted.
-32GB Sandisk Extreme 30MB/s class 10
-Highly detailed scene: leaves foliage etc

Really big improvement from yesterday on the NTSC 24p. I initially got a couple of speed write errors after one second, but on the third go it got going and didn't fail. As you said its quite sporadic, and for me is no big deal as nothing locks up.

On the PAL (25p & 1/50 shutter) side its really unstable . I noticed this yesterday. Numerous write errors after 1 second of recording. Sometimes it went longer but i never got any further than 10 seconds recording before failure. Occasionally had complete lock ups.

This is only on really detailed scenes when trying to push the codec to the higher bitrates (45Mbps plus).

No problems with older peak rate patch 1080p 25fps PAL so far. It's not exactly sunny here, mind. Transcend 16gb class 10 card.

The MJPEG output of this patch cannot be dropped into a Sony Vegas timeline (shows up as audio only), when played on the Win7 media player there is a "fluttering" bottom border. Was able to convert to MP4 in Handbreak and import in the timeline but it had a 1-2 pixel flickering white line across the bottom. No joy in QT 7.6.9 on Win either

Ok sorry I need some help here as i am getting a bit bogged down. there is so much information here and much of it seems to relate to older versions of Ptools. some of the settings suggested dont seem to match the fields available in current Ptools. I am also confused about whether the native 24p is reliable or not?
after checking my version was 1.32 in temporary service mode i jumped in and manged with no problems to hack my camera. I only had the native 24p checked in my new version. i have entered temporary service mode again and can see the version is now 0.01 (set to 0 then increment 0.01) so it seems to have worked fine. i dont know how to check if my video is now 24p. i can play it back in the camera. i thought that from reaidng the threads that this should not happen.
can anyone tell me a good set of settings to get a noticable improvement in the video quality, especially I am wanting 'that film look'
i am elec eng and not stupid my i am just learning this level of detail wrt video.
thanks in advance

From those that have really tried to get every bit of information out of the GH1 it has pretty much been determined that native 24 doesn't work (...really well), I sleep easily at night knowing that Mr. Powell is doing his best to discover every nuance in this camera, if he says it doesn't work it doesn't. That being said I'm sure that within 2 days someone will post asking for the best setting for 24N. Having read almost every post in this forum I have formed a strange addiction hoping everyday some new discovery will be made, hanging on every iteration Mr. Powell comes up with. Solid proof that winters in the mid- west are not good for a healthy mental state.

Experiencing dropped frames today with 1080p 25fps (shutter 50fps) PAL - older version. Dense moving traffic in sunshine. I should probably be testing the newer version, right?
