720pN24 vs 1080i24p

I don't mind the extra space that 1080i24p (or 1080i24pA) takes over 720pN24, I just wanted to know if there is much of a quality difference between these two? And if the 1080i24p IS an actualy 24p source.

1080/24pA is always sourced as 24 progressive frames.

1080/24pA will be somewhat sharper than 720/24p, about 15% sharper. It will also be significantly less compressed.

Thanks for the reply, Barry.

So if I don't mind the extra space it takes, I should be fine with 1080/24pA instead of 720/24pN?

I'm testing now, but FCP shouldn't have an issue with seeing the 1080 recording as real progressive (not a faux one)?

Also is 1080/30p a real 30p setting? I like the "filmish" look and I'd rather shoot in that than 60i. If outputted, it's going to Blu-ray.

If you don't mind the extra space, I would ALWAYS shoot 1080/24pA over 720/24pN.

As for "real progressive" -- the camera only ever images progressive footage. It gets recorded in an interlaced codec, but it's imaged as progressive. 60i doesn't even get imaged interlaced, it gets imaged as progressive from a 60p source, and then gets sliced into fields for recording.

With 24p or 30p, your NLE will extract the footage and present it to you as actual 24p or actual 30p.

What NLE are you using? If you're using Avid, beware, it doesn't recognize the 24pa as a 23.976, you have to use another app, like Raylight for example, to remove the pulldown before editing.

Excellent point, I should have mentioned that. I think Avid is pretty much the only editor that doesn't support 24pA pulldown removal, but yes, it should be a consideration.

Alot of folks with the HVX-200 are fans of filming 108024Pa, editing, noise reducing, etc...then finally downrezzing to 72024PN for the final. You end up with a really high quality 720, which has a minimum of noise thanks to both the NR and the fact that alot of it just becomes too small to resolve from the downrez. A side effect as well is the fact that you can apply more gain while filming using this technique.

Does anyone know if Slow-Mo looks better recorded undercranked in 720 or recorded normally at 1080 and slowed in post. I would test myself but am renting only for the shoot days.
