720p50 workflow

When I first got my new hvx camera, I had no idea of just how unsupported 720p50 is. I am sure there are other Editing systems and workflows out there, but as far as I know, the low to medium avids and fcp do not support the format. So here I am, shooting this lovely slomo footage, with no way to edit or even view the footage off-camera. My first discovery was p2log, which enabled me to convert the mxf files into quicktime movies, and provided the codec for fcp to play them. This little program has been an absolute savior, as the only other options I could find were hardware solutions, i.e the multibridge extreme or Kona 3. Note that video card makers seem to have made the call to support 720p50 only on their top end cards. So now I can view and edit my footage on the computer, but as we ( in N.Z anyway ) still live in an s.d world, I need to be able to down-convert the product. After much trial and error, it turned out to be very simple. I set up a new sequence, with the pal 720x576 frame size, square pixel aspect, and still the dvcprohd720p50 compressor setting, then copy and pasted the clips over, then exported to 10bit S.D, then anywhere...seems to work sweet. Very sharp picture, it appears not to distort the image or soften it...So until fcp supports my camera properly, this is my work-around....Guy Hamlin.

That is the current best workaround, yes. For those on the PC, Canopus EDIUS Broadcast version 4.0 and later have full 720/50p support too. Also, Raylight makes 25p and 50p files accessible to PC-based editors.
