720p vs 1080i

Hi,

I've been shooting college football for the last 3 seasons and using 720/60p as I like the film look. For slow motion, I just pulled the file into Cinema Tools and conformed it to 23.98 fps. I used to use a Panasonic HPX-500 P2 camera but a new position has me using Sony XD Cam. Anyway, I've been told that in a 1920x1280 sequence 1080/60i is what I need to shoot so the clip isn't stretched out at all as opposed to 720/60p. I tested it out a bit last week and I thought 60i in action shots looked horrible. Am I right or just crazy?

Thanks

Curious if this is a typo: "been told that in a 1920x1280 sequence"
Also, I don't really know what you mean by a clip being 'stretched out'. Is referring to aspect ratio? HD is always 16:9, as far as I know.
The EX3/1 doesn't do 60 FRAMES per second at 1080. It does do 60 FRAMES per second in 720 however.
Whenever you see 60i, it means 60 FIELDS per second, which are only half of frame. These half frames are INTERLACED to create a whole frame, and when viewed on a computer they have jagged edges, and it is not a good look. But you may be crazy anyway, I can't comment on that because I don't know you. ; )

60p is great for sports. It may not be as high res as 1080/60i but for faux slo-mo it destroys interlaced footage.

And yeah, like Dana said on computer screens and most HDTVs (projection/DLP/CRT being the exception) it looks great.

60p isn't the film look. 24p is since it's progressive AND has the frame rate of motion picture film cameras/projectors.
