This is an expensive workaround, but it should work. I've been using my HVX PAL, and discovered something that can be the path for us to use the slow motion and fast motion effects of 720p in FCP.
The camera comes with a component out cable. There's an option that lets you select to output the signal to 1080i. This works to output the 720p material too. I know this because I shot some slow motion stuff and saw it on my 1080i only crt. It looked great.
So I assume if one has a capture card that has component in, and captures with the dvcprohd codec, one can have the variable frame rates effect in a 1080i 50 timeline. Now the question is:
Who has a Kona card, or a cheap capture card for mac in order to try this out?
And more: What is our cheapest option?
And one more thing I saw. In my powerbook, seeing an edited dvcprohd in quicktime 7.00 was CRAP- full of noise. Updated it to Quicktime 7.04, and it looks like what you see in FCP: clean.
One last thing: I updated my laptop with updates for my old mac production studio (BIG MISTAKE) and while before it could play back dvcprohd smoothly, now it struggles. Damn.
And I still can't export a widescreen dvcprohd file compressed in H264. The irony is I used flip4mac and it exported widescreen to WMV! Strange, indeed.
