720p or 1080i for sport

Hi I am shooting a documentary with the 302 following cyclists soon and I was wondering which format would be better 720PN or 1080i in DVCPROHD ( our computers aren't up to AVCINTRA yet). I like 720PN for the extra record time but should I shoot interlaced for movement ? This will be a good test for the CMOS chips too. Final delivery is for broadcast in either SD digi beta or HD ( yet to be determined ). Also does shooting 1080 and then downscaling to 720 reduce noise ?

Hi, what do you think about 720/50p? I think thats a good choice, because you get progressive pictures with "good" movement/skew skills....
 
Thanks for the replies, why is it that 720/50p downconverts better than SD ? and what about 720pn to SD ? I will probably have a 1080i hdv cam as a b camera will they mix together ok ? Sorry about all the questions I'm just trying to wrap my head around it.
 
Converting a progressive frame is always easier and cleaner. 1080/50i is interlaced fields, so converting an interlaced field pair into a different-sized interlaced field pair won't be as clean as just converting a progressive frame.

720p or 720pN, makes no difference.
 
Considered to give 720pN25 a go?

As the screening and broadcast each night where SD we used dv25 on tape and in quicktime files as delivery format, worked out very good.
 
I personally would never shoot sport at 25P. It is half the frame rate of 50i (although twice the vertical resolution) It will look strobey and jumpy when converted to 50i for Digi Beta. It may look 'filmic' as P frames on websites though.

If you still want to go 25P ypu may want to use a relevant shutter speed to crisp up the movement which may look smeary.

I did trials and 720/50p looks great and I think is the best option for the job. I was shooting bikes today from the back of our camera van tracking with cyclists doing 60kph and no skew ! I also shot in low light and the noise was acceptable. I think this camera has copped a lot of flak but it is an amazing camera.
