720p 50p resolution correct?

Hi

I am new to the HVX200. Just bought a PAL version in December 07.

I always thought, the 720p 50p mode had a resolution of 1280 x 720.
I just got On Location and there I saw, that the 720p 50 mode only had a resolution of 960 x 720.
Is that correct? I feel a little bit tricked if that is true.
The 1080i 50i mode makes 1440 x 1080 as I had expected.

Can anybody confirm that or tell me, how I get to 1280 x 720 in the 720p 50p mode?

Thanks

I noticed the same thing.

I noticed the same thing.

Hi, I noticed the same thing when I started working in Premiere Pro on my PC. I have an NTSC version but this shouldn't matter in this specific deal. I'm not sure why this is and I am interested as well, but I just changed the pixel aspect ratio to the proper size when I exported and I didn't have any problems.

Of course one can export the footage to another resolution but this is not the point.
The question is: is it normal, that the HVX has this low resolution in the 720p mode?
If not, and I think it should have a "normal" 720p resolution, how can we get it?
When I produce for a TV station:and they want 720p material, I am sure they expect 1280 x 720 and not any lower resolution.
So what can we do about it?

I believe that is part of the DvcPro. 720 is 960x720 and then it is stretched to 1280x720. Likewise when recording to 1080 it is 1280x1080 and then it is stretched to 1920x1080. Its the way it works, and it's the same for the HPX500.

720p is an "oddity" but it works.

As someone else said the trick is in DVCPro and the PAR.

I find it works well for TV and of course it is the only way to shoot "off frame-rates"

Choose your PremPro Project setting carefully. You may need to create a custom setting with the correct PAR as I did. We deliver 16:9 anamorphic to broadcast.

That is how DVCProHD encodes the video. It saves on the data rate.

HDCam does something similar- but it uses 1440x1080 for 1080 instead.

Sorry, what is the PAR?

Can you give examples for the setting?

Pixel Aspect Ratio is used as compression as stated, if you have ever shot with MINIDV it uses a PAR the pixels have an asecpt ratio they are compressed is rectangles instead of squares,

consider PAL in a normal situation it is 768x576 Square Pixels

but MINI DVs PAR makes it 720x576 with a PAR of 1.067 i think NTSC is 0.9

so if you do the math 720 * 1.067 = 768.24 so pretty dam close

lets look at 720p Normal 720p is as you stated 1280x720

But DVCPROHD makes it 960x720

so the math 960 * 1.333 = 1279.82 pretty much 1280

If you have Premeire CS3 just choosing the right preset is easy for MXF files but it should be set to

General
Editing mode: P2 720p 50Hz DVCPROHD
Timebase: 50.00 fps

Video Settings
Frame size: 960h 720v (1.333)
Frame rate: 50.00 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333)
Fields: No Fields (Progressive Scan)

Audio Settings
Sample rate: 48000 samples/second

Capture Format
HDV Capture

Video Rendering
Maximum Bit Depth: Off
Preview File Format: DVCPro100 720p 50Hz
Compressor: DVCPro100 720p 50Hz
Color depth: Millions+ of colors

Hope this helps

Capture format is set to HDV because premiere doesn't have a preset for DVCPROHD live Firewire Capture, it can't do it (its dumb cause onlocation can), not to worry tho this setting is ONLY used when aciuring from firewire it has nothing to do with the timeline/rendering settings
