720 when I can't be tethered, 1080 when I can, or for short form. The real difference, as Barry mentioned, is the additional bandwidth for 1080, which really cuts down on some of the artifacting.
For us it's a matter of what the client asks for. They often dictate what we shoot in, even though they don't always know their arse from a hole in the ground!
But that is what makes this camera so awesome. Not having to turn 50% of the work away!!!
Read on another thread that there is no difference in treating the 1080p/25 HVX signal as 25p or 50i as the image is made and stored progressively and the workflow would be to shoot 1080p25, and edit in a 1080i50 preset for example in FCP.
So to understand, there is no possibiliy overcranking in that mode? (Apart from what i saw in Barry's book that there is a possibility to undercrank and simulate 1p, 2p, 4p, 7p and 12.5p).
Just returned from Northern Patagonia in Argentina and saw this post. I recently submitted my Demo reel to Jessica Napoli who is the Director of Acquisitions for National Geographic Digital Motion in DC and I asked her the same question you've asked in this post. She said
" Either 720 or 1080I is good, I believe most of our clients prefer the 1080I but we work with both."
Interesting she never referred to the 1080 30p, although I am sure they use it. I shot quite a bit of 720pn on this trip and some 1080 30p on the days I carried my lap top with. Cheers...
