720 P vs. 1080i ? Anyone?

Can someone explain the "real" difference between choosing to shoot 720p and 1080i? I know that 720p has less lines of vertical resolution, but I still get advice to shoot it over 1080i, and I am not sure. Is interlaced really such a problem? What exactly is interlaced vs. Progressive? Sorry to sound inexperienced, but I am new to this, and will be shooting a film soon with either a Varicam (which I think only shoots 720p) or the HPX-500 (which shoots 1080i). Thanks anyone...
 
Shoot whatever the chip is native to - don't make the camera uprez internally...
