720 or 1080?

Hey guys, maybe you can help?

I'm trying to figure out what is the preferred frame size in shooting for lets say, an HD music video or an HD short film meant for dvd and web distribution. Is it 720 or 1080? Also what would be the pros and cons of either size besides storage space?

720p equals 1280x720, am I correct?
1080i/p equals 1920 X 1080? Er uh does it?

Thanks,
Jay

Well it really depends. The way the DVCProHD Codec works 1080 footage ends up having a milder compression scheme per frame. Personally I don't think the advantages of 1080 outweigh the disadvantages when shooting to SD DVD/Web.

For greenscreen work and for uprezzing to film I'd use 1080, for most other things I simply don't have enough cards to warrant using it.

If you're only going to web/standard def dvd I'd shoot 720p30n or DVCPro50 SD.

thanks VenezuelanD.

Tell me, why would you shoot 720p30n over 720p/24pN?

Also, why would you shoot DVCPro50 SD over HD? Wouldn't the down rez footage of HD look better then the SD footy?

The only reason you'd shoot 30pN over 24pN is if you wanted the look of 30p instead of 24p. If you want 24p, shoot 24pN.
