720 and 1080

I was messing around with some stuff Kaku shot.

Specifically the stuff he shot of the city.

I had a 1080 timeline in FCP and I uprezzed the 720 stuff he shot to 1080 and just went back and forth, looking at the differences and similarities.

What I've noticed is that 720P stuff looks more edgy, videoy, bleachy, sharper while the 1080P stuff looks warmer, fuller and slightly more colorful. The colors are a little richer in 1080, why is that? I thought all dvcpro was recording in 4:2:2

One thing I did not notice was a difference in detail. I kept trying to look for it but they both looked the same to me in terms of detail. Actually, the 1080 suprised me because it looked slightly softer when it came to text and lines. I wonder if Kaku shot with the same settings for 720 and 1080


When someone gets a chance, could we please get a res chart for 720 and 1080? Or maybe somone could even go outside and film some dirt or some gravel and do both modes so we all can tell.

I'm really excited to see someone shooting the same scene in all modes so we get an idea, I guess that's what the shootout will be for?

I've been a proud supporter of the HVX but lately I've been a little worried.

720 and 1080 look the same.. Over at DVINFO they are saying the res is a lot less than Jan's figure, 600 horizontal lines, worse than the Z1... and of course, Noise issues...

Lets talk..not just ignore..
 
I would be interested to also see an IDENTICAL locked off shot demonstrating both 720p and 1080p. Maybe a nice .tif for everyone to compare.

The shot would need some nice detail... maybe pylons and electrical wires with some people in it too.

I wouldn't get discouraged.
I'd wait for Barry to conduct a structured test.

Although, we all believe the XLH1 will be better in the rez deptarment.

You have to look at the whole picture (no pun intended :), the HVX will probably win in latitude.

As far as noise floor, I'm not sure.

I've shot footage on both cams and the HVX in both 720 & 1080 and my observations put the XLh1 Between the two HVX modes in detail. The HVX in 1080 has at least 150 more lines of res than in 720. Kaku may have had a slight focus issue. That being said I wouldn't hesitate to shoot some overcranked 720 and uprez it into a 1080 project, it would not be distracting in the least.

Did you shoot res charts in both modes? Can we please see them?
 
The Hvx 200 features will beat all of them by 10 foot pole and to compare two image with two camera with different price and differernt format is comparing apple to orange to banana to coconut. This is a fruitless excercise becuase you dont buy a camera based on a look only. You buy beacause it is flexible enough to make money for you. Look is your customer choice which is more on money then pixel count. ROI is the fastest for the HVX200 and it will prove it any day it is a matter of time. Panasonic fullfill there promise on there part now its our turn to buy it and tell them we appreciate the product. Pulling hair which can be fix in a post is waste of time. I will never buy any tape product for the camera it is cheap but cheap it is. If you want to show some class and high tech gadget to your customer they want be impressed by tape based machine but P2 will be a cool looking promotion for your skill.

Are you sure about that ?

I am very curious, i want the HVX to be the best, but...

OK, the HVX seems to have a better color richness, but the XLH1 seems to have much more rez and also seems a lot cleaner.
 
I smell a Panasonic puppet.... Seriously, p2metoo, I'm not talking about p2 and all the great features that the HVX has, I'm talking about image quality. All those features don't mean jack squat. When 'normal' people watch something, its the final image that counts most. Why would I shoot in 1080 when 720 looks the same? What's the latitude? How will the HVX compare to the Canon when blown up to theater-like proportions.

With that said, I'm looking forward to SHOOT OUT. When is that Barry?
