720/60p?

Does anyone use 60p for anything other than cranking for slowmo? It seems to me it'd be a solid mode to use where one would typically shoot 60i in 1080 or SD? In shooting video (not film) it should capture motion very well (action video, pans, etc.). Are there any drawbacks? Biger files?

Depends on your delivery format.

If you are going to NTSC broadcast or DVD, then there is little to be gained from 60P (IMHO) because you can use only half of those frames. You also change the relative shutter speed, effectively halving it.

However, if you are putting action videos on the web, then 60P is awesome because you are no longer restricted by the old TV standards, and you can in fact stream very smooth 60P if you want to.

The fact that you are using twice as many frames per second as usual is no problem and doesn't significantly impact data rates and bandwidth requirements, because streaming formats are GOP based and encode differences between one frame and the next. With more frames per second, there will be fewer differences between them, so they should be easier to encode than frames displaying the same scene at 30P.

I totally love 720/60p for live events. We shot the UCLA basketball game against Coppin State in 720/60p and it's gorgeous. The major sports networks (ABC, ESPN, and Fox) chose 720/60p over 1080/60i, so yes, if you want to shoot high-motion events and deliver that "live" look, 720/60p is currently the best mode possible.

That all makes sense. Is there a downside to it for less than fast action subject matter for web use?

Barry how do you view 720-60P. On my HDTV it moves with the same cadence a 30p and my computer has a heart attack when trying to play it.

If your TV is ATSC-compatible it should handle it. Every HD broadcast from Fox, ABC, and ESPN is done in 720/60p. P2 Viewer handles it fine on my laptop, but it couldn't handle it on my prior single-core. I think the video card has a lot to do with it too.

I also use VFR 60fps when I'm not sure what footage from a live event I will want to do slo-mo with or not. It does give you a lot of flexability that way. Where as Native mode, once you do VFR, you're stuck.
