720/60p vs. 720/24p vs. 720/24pn to be mixed w/ dvx10024p?

HI, I've read Barry's book and am still a bit confused on which frame rate to shoot for a documentary I've been working on the last few years. For the majority of the doc, I've shot on DVX100s, in 24p and (I think) 24pa modes, then took a pause. Several months ago I sold those cams and bought hpx170s, and I've resumed shooting the documentary. I filmed initially w/ the 170s in 720/60p mode, thinking that was what I was supposed to do in order for the footage to "splice" well w/ the dvx footage. I didn't shoot 24pn mode as I thought that would introduce rendering issues when editing. I have other interviews coming up for this project and wonder whether I should shoot in 720/60p or 720/24p for the remainder of the documentary capture. In the end, half the overall footage will probably have come from the dvx, and half of the footage will have come from the hpx170. Any suggestions? (hope this makes sense.) Thanks.

If you like the look of 24p, then 24pN on the HVX would integrate with 24p from the DVX.

If you shoot 60p, you're getting the "reality" look, which won't match the DVX's 24p.

Thanks Barry. So shooting in 24pN won't adversely affect all the 24p footage brought in from the dvx when editing in FCP? I mean, if I don't use Advanced Pulldown with all the footage acquired from the dvx (as this doc. probably won't be output to film, just dvd and maybe screened) will it still cut smoothly w/ 24pN I guess is what I'm asking. I definitely want to keep the 24p look, just wondering which of the modes is best for editing w/ the minidv footage. Sorry if I'm being unclear!

I fear you've fallen victim to one of the most prevalent and perpetually incorrect assumptions (or assertions) about 24p/24pA.

24pA has NOTHING to do with outputting to film. It has everything to do with EDITING. If you're intending to edit your footage as 24p to make a 24p DVD, or to output to the web, you should always always always always at all times and in all cases, be shooting 24pA on a DVX.

The straight "24p" mode is for when you're delivering your footage as 60i. And in today's world, there's not a whole lot of reason to do that.

So have you been editing already? If so, on what -- a 60i timeline presumably? If so, you can match that dynamic by using 720/24p (*not* PN) on the HPX170.

If you haven't started editing yet, you're fine; you can strip all the pulldown out of the DVX footage using Cinema Tools and edit on a 24p timeline right from the start.

Okay, thanks for clarifying. I haven't started editing. I have about 100 hours of dvx footage, most shot in 24PA, some probably in 24P (before I knew what I was doing). So everything I shoot with the 170 for this project I'll shoot in 24pN. Many thanks Barry!
