720 24P footage, audio out of sync? what gives?

Very long story short...

I've been shooting with P2 media for several years and never seen this. The footage is not from my camera, it was from the second operator's 170 - for some reason the audio is out of sync!

Camera was set to 720/24p, footage shows up in monitor on camera as 720/24p, and plays back in sync.

When loaded into FCP (vers 7.02) this footage gets weird! It plays back audio with the clip - out of sync mind you) for about 10-15 seconds, and then the audio drops out!

I've tried re-importing, and cant seem to figure it out....

I have managed to record the audio (analog) from the camera playback and tried to sync, with no luck.. I've also tried to convert the video to 720/30fps, and that wont sync either...

What am I missing? I'm certain my nerves are getting the better of me at this point.. is it something obvious?

thanks in advance....

William

Just by looking and guessing it appears as though the video is running a true 24 frames while the audio is running 30.. could that be? This is really really strange

Clearly there's been some issue involved when importing it to the editing program. As you said, the footage plays back just fine in the camera, so the error is being introduced during the log & transfer process.

I'm moving this thread over to that forum so that experienced editors who may have encountered this, will be able to assist.

Thanks Barry...

There was also media on these P2's that was shot at 720/30pn, those clips imported without issue, it's just these 720/24p's that are problematic. I recall in the old days it was sketchy to record different settings on the same P2 card, but that shouldn't really be an issue?

Looking more closely at FCP I can see that after import, in the compressor tab, it's showing them as DVCPRO HD 720p60 files, when in fact, according to the camera (in the lower left hand corner of the clips monitor, they are listed as 720/24p files.

How can I get FCP to recognize these as 720/24p files upon transfer? I had a friend import them on his machine using earlier version of FCP (somewhere in the 6.xx's), and they did the same thing on his machine.

Really appreciate any assistance here!

Thanks...

PS.. The only legitimate married (sunk) video and audio I have thus been able get off of these cards and into FCP is a standard def downconversion via the in-camera dub function on my HVX-200 (I made a mini dv tape and it syncs, playsback fine)

Are they 720/24p? Or 720/24pN? It makes a difference.

No, there was never anything sketchy about recording different formats on the same P2 card. You may be confusing that with XDCAM, where you couldn't record multiple formats on the same disc, but P2 was designed from day 1 to support multiple formats.

Sounds like they're 720/24p and not 720/24pN.

As for the specifics, it probably has to do with the "remove duplicate frames" issue, or maybe you have to run the files through Cinema Tools to strip out the duplicate frames. But I don't use that program, so I'll defer to those who do.

Yeah ... this is very strange. When I go into property clips on the P2 card itself, it says they were recorded at 720/59.94p, will a pulldown of 2:3. I can play straight off the P2 card in the log and transfer preview window, and it plays back in sync, no issue.

Once it's captured, and I attempt to play it back, (even in just the source window before putting it into a sequence) I loose sync and only get about 10 seconds of audio before it drops it alltogether.

I've tried various timelines, cinema tools, QT conversions.. nothing...

I wish i knew what I was missing!!

Check your log and transfer preferences for how you have set the "remove duplicate frames" checkbox.

Is it checked or not?

Thanks David,

I appreciate your response...

I just checked those prefs, and the box is checked.. I'm going to de-select it now and try another import and see what I get.

HOLY SH***!!!

I knew it was something stupid!!!! THANK-YOU DAVID S. !!!!

Really.. I am now able to save my holiday weekend, my pride, and my face with the client early next week!

I've never shot footage at 720/59.97 before, so I have never come across this.... I specifically asked the second camera op to shoot at 720/29.97 -and he mistakingly chose another scene file on his camera and didn't realize until after we had finished the shoot....

Many, many thanks.... there's a cold one being hoisted in your name and honor a little later today!!!

Much appreciated...

William
