720---1080?

Hey guys. Going through the films and posts on here, I come to realize, it seems most prefer shooting 720 over 1080. Why is this, wouldn't you want the highest possible resolution? And, if you're shoot in 720, it records at 60, so that can be converted to 24p, in FCP or Voltaic? Forgive my questions, HD is all new to me coming from the DVX...

Ok, I found a lot of great threads on the 'debate' but if I go with the 720, how do I convert to 24p?

I would prefer 1080 for a lot of situations, but for the following 720 is the choice:

Slow mo
Shooting lots of fast motion ( with the camera itself )
Quick turn around for some situations

1080 looks great, but then I don't have to deal with pulldown hassles. If I did I think I'd just move across the atlantic and take advantage of the better tasting coffee.

just drop your 60p files on a 24p timeline.

And that's it, no conversion, it'll be 24p from this point on? Oh, in FCP setting I can either choose 24 or 23.98, which one is he correct one?

Oh yes, another problem solved, I think...I dropped the footage into a 23.98, prores timeline, and it plays back on my monitor, before it wouldn't play, it froze until I stopped the play bar...

**Now, the next issue...how do I export it to DVD, what settings, QT, Compressor? Thanks!

i'm a premiere guy. after that i don't know anything. Ben B is a regular around here. he'll chime in once he see's this. also try the workflow subthread. you can probably find something.

Was hoping you had FCP 7 which would have made it easy. My method won't work with version 6. Sorry.

I converted the footage in Voltaic, dropped into a 23.98 timeline, edited it and sent to compressor. Mpeg2, best quality etc... DVD studio pro showed an error, then when I did get the burned dvd, it wouldn't play on my player. I have no idea what could be wrong, but I have a feeling it's in the settings I'm using.
