$700 for video card

Re: $700 for video card

First, the 5200FX was the worst card ever made.

Second, check out this article: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2307

One noteworthy conclusion they made: "The final surprise of the day was how poorly the consumer level cards performed in comparison to the rest of the lineup. Even though we took the time to select the highest clocked monstrosities that we could find, there was nothing that we could do to push past the workstation parts in performance most of the time."

Awesome article! Those tests show you pretty conclusively that the workstation cards are better by wide margins, I may want one myself! The only question is, for what? If you are doing (no exaggeration) Lord of the rings type 3D work, you want one of these cards. But anything less and it is, in my opinion, money that could be better spent in other bandwidth-sensitive areas of my computer, like more RAM or faster hard drives. Especially if you are doing video work which really doesn't even tax your video card at all.
I do a lot of Maya 3D work for my day job and I am using an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Got it for 100 bux and it can push a large, large volume of polygons and do surprisingly fast GI/Final Gather renders. If i can manage 1,000,000 polygon scenes in 3D with this card, do I need $700 more horsepower?

I guess you can always get better or faster though...

Re: $700 for video card

well i had one of the parehlia cards for dual dvi and it worked great but then i went to three monitors and that was a huge hassle.

the choices for dual 3 dvi's was almost nonexistent.

it was either some matrox specialty card that they described as being for state and local government monitoring centers at something like $1800? or i found this pdny card that was like $400 or less.

i am going to read that link that was posted.

has anyone lately (or ever?) done a real comparison of the various video cards specifically with NLE like premiere pro, after effects and vegas?

i'm seriously thinking about getting two of those new large benq monitors. i have a friend who is an acer dealer and i can get them at his cost. 2 large monitors should be easier on the eyes than 3 17" monitors. easier to visually scan 2 than 3 i think...

Re: $700 for video card

matthew, I'm sure two monitors will be much better ergonomically, as you won't have to turn your head from side to side as much. Easier on the neck (and the eyes). I'd love to get two 19-21" displays. But first I have to pick up a new video card ($400), ram ($250), hard drives ($250), ugh. Talk about breaking the bank!

Re: $700 for video card

yeah if my system gets any bigger i'll have to either build an addition to the computer room at home or build out a room in the basement.

i'm getting ready to test gigabit ethernet to see if i can throw my rack with the raid in the basement to put the noise/heat someplace where nobody will hear or feel it.
