$700 for video card

Re: $700 for video card

Yeah. That's a smoking deal.

"256MB PCIe x16 nVidia Quadro FX 3400, Dual DVI or Dual VGA or DVI + VGA"

Re: $700 for video card

I've worked on 3D workstations that had $1200+ graphics cards installed. My bet is that with PCI-X, consumer cards will start to creep up in price and features. As more NLE's adopt the use of open GL support for processing and rendering tasks, the importance and value of a "second" computer" basically sitting on the graphics buss, will become more evident.

Hmmm, what am I missing here? Why are people paying so much for graphics cards when a $200 Radeon 9800 pro will push the same number of pixels? For that matter, why pay for a proprietary, buggy card like the Parhelia when you can get Nvidia's top card, the 6800GT, for closer to $400? The Parhelia claims to do ntsc video output via the s-video cable, but I have never seen a card that does this well when two computers monitors are also hooked up. Besides - Vegas, After Effects and a whole lot of other progs have moved on to firewire preview anyway...

What am I missing?

Re: $700 for video card

(Let me know if I am wrong!)

The top card for NVIDIA was the Quadro FX 4000 which cnet lists between $1491-$1853. Isn't the 6800gt more geared towrds gaming than 3d modeling and rendering?

Hell, I dont know.

Re: $700 for video card

There are consumer graphics cards and pro graphics cards. The consumer cards cost less, which is why I raised an eyebrow at John's GeForce costing $900. But he didn't get a GeForce; he got a Quadro, and that makes sense.

Look around in there.

Re: $700 for video card

Tks David

One day; I have intentions of learning (at least playing) with the 3D apps out there (Like Rich and a few others have) for FX work in my little short films. ONe of the reasons I went with the Q FX 3400; not just for gaming :P ::)

Re: $700 for video card

why not just get an NVidia GeForce-6800 ULTRA DDL?
It can hold dual 30" as well. On a 2.5 G5- I only did it once on a machine with 4gigs of RAM. Worked smoooth with motion and FCPHD working at the same time.

Not sure what systems specs a PC would need to run it realtime.

Re: $700 for video card

No prob, Ronik!

Remember, these graphics cards are for 3D rendering--they're 3D accelerators. Video editing has little to do with your card, as video (and most applications) are 2D.

The FX5200 is a decent card. I had one, but upgraded to a 5700 Ultra for gaming. Still not the hottest for video games, but I'm actually much more interested in video anyway, so my next upgrades are going to be RAM and SATA hard drives. Think of it this way: Apple only uses high end components and hardware, and they know what their computers are going to be used for. The 5200 should be just fine for most needs.

Here's my question, though. Do the higher end graphics cards run dual monitors better? How much of a difference is there, if any?

Re: $700 for video card

Thank you
Do the higher end graphics cards run dual monitors better?

I know that you'll need a specific graphic card to run the Apple 30in HD display. This card can run up to two of those displays!

Re: $700 for video card

I have zero idea on what is best and what is preferable...

But my card is seriously smoking. Call of Duty Multiplayer Online is flawless down to the last particle of smoke from a buring Nazi. I love it.

Re: $700 for video card

In this days video editing more and more start using OpenGL and 3d rendering to preview, when you creating 3d titles or other 3d motion. But many times you using same machine to create other effects, like Particle illution, or Maya, or other, they using 3d acceleration on your card to full potential.
Then you realise that you need more then just 2d preformance. In many cases more you paying better your card will be. Pro level cards usualy have more memory and specialise GPU's optimized for vektor calculations, higher resolution ... etc.
And like John, I am also using my PC to play FPS and RPG games quiet bit offten :) so chopy video = you dead .

What do you think about the GeForce FX5200?[/quote]

Avoid this card!!!!!!!!!!!!! I used to have it, and here's the deal. This card is widely claimed to be Nvidia's worst card ever made - just search the internet. glitchy, slow and very poor performance overall. I used it for about a year (when I was still using a shite computer), and it got the worst benchmark ratings I've ever seen. I absolutely hated it from day one, and longed for my old card which was about two years older than the 5200 model but still performed WAY better. Don't waste your money!

As for the debate over a Quadro vs. a consumer card like the 6800GT, I'd be curious to hear from others here why you might need a super pricey, high end GFX card. It is my impression that Nvidia and other Mfrs. have simply done a really good job of making people think they need a "workstation" card (read: expensive) to do anything high end. I am currently running Maya 6 (the most high end 3D app out there) on a scrappy little Radeon 9600 Pro which cost me about 100 bux. I can manage scenes in excess of 500,000 polygons without my machine/card slowing down. I have dual 21" monitors going with both set at 1280X1024 - it runs flawlessly, I get great render times and have no complaints at all. I run After Effects, 3D apps, video editing, games, all manner of graphics-intense applications and I've never noticed a single problem that could be traced to video card performance. How an $1800 card will improve on this performance enough to justify the additional $1700 cost is beyond me, since most performance issues in these apps has more to do with processor speed, RAM and system bandwidth. Can anyone give more detail on this issue?
