Hey guys. I started shooting a film last summer with a $700 Sony handycam (miniDV). It didn't go to well because I didn't have enough help so I postponed it t this summer. I decided to edit the behind the scenes footage. It's pretty cool. Let me know what you guys think alright? God bless!

Behind the Scenes

coolio, looks pretty nice!

like your dolly shots. framing was excellent for em, nice and close, made it feel very intense

yea, those dolly shots were neat. Mind explaining how you created the track for the moving dolly shots?

I like how you were using a clapper on video and how you couldn't even see it when it clapped.

Just wanted to poke a little fun.

But that dolly was pretty well made, good job.

wow guys! Thanks! Yeh, that dolly gave me a lot of problems. In the beginning, it was using PVC and it would be really rough and annoying. For day 1 I was using it and the dolly shot wasn't as good, but, then I decided to buy metal tracks. They are heavy, long, and annoying, but hey, it works. Hopefully this summer on my shoot, I will have someone with a pro dolly and crane to work for me.

I will be shooting this same movie but with the DVX this summer. I have about 60 people auditioning and working on getting a DP. I need a DP or someone to do lighting without pay. Hopefully I can find someone.

Yes, I did use Vegas. I used the consumer version of it. It's called Vegas Moviestudio 4.0. I really want to get Vegas 6, but for now, this is working just fine. I did major color correcting on the shots as you can see. I like high contrasted shots, sort of like Michael Bay's style from Bad Boys II and The Island. I like close up shots. I always use them when I feel appropriate.

Well I'm glad you guys liked my frames and dolly. I didn't do my best with directing in these just because everything was so hectic because people were never focused, and my crew members sucked so I had to set everything up and do everything. Hopefully this summer I will actually be able to focus on directing the actors. Alright well keep leaving comments if you guys wish. thanks again!

I like how you were using a clapper on video and how you couldn't even see it when it clapped.

what did you mean by that? You said that I didn't use the clapper? I did, you didn't see it?

Hey man, you're lucky. I mean, you admit that you KNOW you shouldn't be running around wielding guns in public, and that you could be in huge trouble if the cops showed up, but you did it anyway... I don't want to be an old man but the thing they hammered into us time and time again in school was that this was the #1 way to get yourself shot, or your equipment confiscated, or get charged with a felony. Granted, the LAPD is a bit more unforgiving than wherever you are, but it's still a fact. Running around with guns in public is a bad idea. I've done it. I've narrowly escaped SERIOUS trouble. Don't do it.

On the other hand, if you live in a place where you don't have to pay for filming permits (and it seems like you don't), it's the easiest thing in the world to call in to the police and say, "Hey, we're going to be shooting in this place from 10 until 4, and we're going to have replica guns." And then you've vastly reduced the chances of getting yourself hurt or in trouble.

All that aside, congrats on getting on with your movie. The corrected stuff looks really nice.

Men, that Dolly shot is very impressive. I liked the movement when the Dolly shot of the first cop.

Where are you located?

hey man way to go love the GONZO film making, no permits no insurance heck just make movies, that is a true film maker....you get caught so what its a ticket roll camera that is what matters most, shot your film and don't let anyone stop you.

yea, the comment on the guns seems a BIT exaggerated. #1 way to get shot? eh? I can see your good intentions, but lets hope he's got enough brains to NOT use real guns, especially real ammo :) . It seems like your operations are fairly small, so use your head, and shoot films. Then shoot more films.

It wasn't exaggerated at all. Like I said, things may be different here, but when the cops show up they may not wait to find out whether you have real guns at all. That's a risk you're taking and it's a pretty huge risk. A guy in the same program as me, three or four years earlier, was shot by police during a shoot. It doesn't matter if the guns YOU are using are real or not. When I was in school I got pulled over for a traffic violation once, but I happened to be on the way back from the prop house. There were 3 M16s, a shotgun, and various other toys in my backseat. The situation was very tense for a moment. Also, if you commit ANY crime with an airsoft or replica weapon, they can charge you with a felony as if you had used a real weapon. Just a fun fact. I own quite a few replicas, airsoft, and blank-firing weapons, and it's important to know this stuff.

I'm not trying to bash you for what you're doing... it's just basic safety. If you've got replicas out in the woods, whatever. Go nuts. But it looks like you're at a playground. If I was a parent and saw someone at a distance with a handgun at a playground, I'd call 911, not go closer to kindly ask them whether or not they were replicas. That's all I'm saying.

All right, I'm done with my "lecture" now. Go shoot films. Just don't get shot. :)

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. About ther permits, well I'm not sure if I need them. I will find out. Do you guys think it's a lot of money. I will also talk to the police next time I do that. Plus, if the cops come and see a camera on a dolly or crane, a boom operator, people around us with scripts and food and drinks, make up artist, director, I don't think he will think we're commiting a crime. A ticket, yeh maybe, but getting shot...uh, I don't think that will happen where I live.

By the way, I am located in Bethlehem, PA- 18020. Let me know if anyone wants to help out. Peace and thanks again for everything!

Hey lucky the music you used in the end for the rough cut of the scene, what was it ? It sounded a lot like ravenshield

Many places, permits don't cost anything. Some places don't even HAVE permits. I'd guess they're pretty lenient in Pennsylvania. Either way, not a bad skill to learn... getting permits and smooth-talking city officials, I mean.

Just call up your film office with some hypothetical shoot to get the details. That way, if it turns out it's expensive or impossible or whatever, you can still shoot guerilla because you haven't given them all the actual details of your shoot. :)

here in Vegas they want you to carry Insurance and workmans comp and get permits but the insurance the workmans comp cost as much as my DVX so ain't gonna do it.
I shot an entire documentary here with out any of it and even got an interview with the Mayor, so it can be done just keep moving young man. in out get your shots and move to the next location.

haha, alright. That sounds perfect. That's how I planned to do it anyway. Haha! You guys are really helpful. I am getting more and more excited about this summer's shoot. I always watch that video to remind myself of how it is and how much I love directing.

It sounded a lot like ravenshield

It is exactly ravenshield man! I love their track. But for the real film I would get my composer to compose a song for me. But that first scene (at the end of the video) will be different. I decided the scene was too bizarr to happen in real life so I got an idea for another scene I will replace it with. I think it's going to be better because that scene is the opening scene. I want to make the opening scene more dark and gloomy, suspense. I'm gonna have the two cops go undercover to catch some teens dealing drugs out in an alley way. Sort of like the start of Bad Boys II when they go undercover to catch the KKK. I think it will be cool. Alright, keep those suggestions, tips, or anything else you want coming. the more suggestions and tips the better. It's not only helping me but other people too. Lol! Alright, peace

My favorite is when the director says:
"Don't ask why..just do it!"
I will have to use that sometime......

Haha! Yeh! That was pretty funny. That was annoying. By the time I explained why, we would lose sun and there goes the shooting day. I even started explaining but was like, "don't ask just do it!" Haha! I'm not strict all the time, but when people are not in focus or going to slow and fooling around, I can get cranky. Hehe!
