FS7: 7" Client/Director Monitor Preference

Have only used the 702 Bright on the Alexa Mini. Was good for viewing outdoors, but made it hard to get a feel for the image when working indoors.

You nailed it! We picked one up today and it really is great, especially since Im coming from a old DP6. Like you said though, indoors I had to turn the backlight down to 0-5% to get it where one "might" be able to expose by eye. If I were getting a monitor for controlled environments(indoors) only I'd probably go with one of their OLED units.

Looks like SmallHD is at again, now with the 503 and 703 Ultra Brights that will be shipping at the end of March for $2,499 and $2,999. Early adopters can pre order them now for $300 and $400 off respectively.

I'm leaning towards a 7Q+ to have the recording option if I need it (and the great reviews from current Odyssey users), but the 703 Ultra Bright looks promising as well!

Any thoughts on these two new monitors?

I have the Odyssey7Q and love it, but I'll be ordering the 703 for SURE. 2500 nits? That's the cure to all of the outside monitoring woes we've suffered for years. Will make ACs' lives vastly easier, or provide a director's monitor that can actually be seen (without the director having to hide under a makeshift tent).

Very exciting piece of kit.

Now the dir and clients will be telling you its too bright..

I have the AC7 SDI/HDMI OLED 7.7 inch SMALLHD monitor. I bought a pro-aim directors monitor cage (knockoff of the wooden camera one).

It adds a bit of contrast to the images, making them pleasing for clients/framing. It's probably not the most color accurate and definitely not the easiest to adjust color accuracy, but it's very close and I like the 7.7 inch screen. It also has the option for me to set one button false color HML - which I find very useful for exposing or checking exposure.

I've also used an Odyssey 7 monitor, I find that to be more color accurate but also to feel a bit flat? Perhaps that's oxymoronic to say.

One cool fact about having a monitor/recorder is the ability to also record your own copy of footage if you have to hand off cards at the end of the shoot for example. Can help you build your reel with that pesky don't have it anymore footage

15" is minimum for a studio directors monitor. In the field, smaller 7" are pretty normal for running around.

People on Reduser seem to really like the Osse 15" monitor. It's very cheap as well.
