6lbs Sony F35

Gonna try to come up with some simple shell next but light weight is more important to me than anytime of rugged protection.

The body is 6lbs. With the 7Q and the 18-35 PL it is 9lbs. I can get lighter with both and also the camera will run off Sony M batteries with D Tap so complete the goal is under 10.

The F35 regular body without IF box or anything on it is 11.5 lbs, so just about 1/2 the weight.

Mini isn't really fitting in my eyes, Sony like numbers. A FS5 is a less capable FS7 just like the fx3 fx6 and fx9 add features on same sensor, while a F55 with slightly less features is a F5 which I think was only named to keep the F3 company. Now we thought the F23 and F35 referred to the sensor size but then along camera the F65 which sounds cool. So I know this might sound non sensical but using Sony logic of non logic I like F15 the most.

I really like the F15. Is there a specific project you need to stay under 10lbs for?

Never done before sony f35 drone project?

Specifically I’d love to put F35 on gimbal and drone, I think global shutter would look great at 70mph in the air. I think anything that could fly Ronin M or MX could carry it.

I have access to regular ronin so that’s what I’m setting it up on the start.

So in your mind, the F15 is meant for what the actual Alexa Mini was meant for, small spaces, gimbal, car work and so on? So F15 is like a B-cam to the F35, or did you plan to make it hero camera?

Don’t get me wrong, this is amazing, and really impressive to see the work, but curious to see how you would use it as an A cam.

Yes exactly, it would be great to have small 2nd option that is ready to go instead of having to rebuild A cam.

I am in the unusual situation of having more F35 bodies than CCD's which has made this possible. This camera is also a collection of "damaged" parts that could be used in this camera because I am reworking the fans. It is really easy to power 2 fans off the 12v line, have a POT on the body to control the speed. Of course the F35 gives fan errors but I just turn off display and ignore.

This motherboard (MB-1100) has MAX Fan Issues so it would give errors anyway
This REI Power Card powers the camera but the fans do not start

So two fans now run independently of the F35 fan control, just off "dumb" 12v line.

If it made the difference, could you get rid of the fans for the drone build? Would moving through the air be sufficient cooling?

I don't think you need the fans at all especially if the case has open airflow. I think Nikon is the next piece of puzzle, PL is less options mostly because they are higher quality materials. my Rokinon set used to look great on the F35 and weight nothing compared to the 18-35 PL even. The Ninja Star is so incredibly light even if I add in the weight of HDMI converter nothing can beat that in the weight competition.

Another plus is power consumption, I am able to run F35 off Sony M Battery when the extra parts are removed. If I try this battery on my normal F35 it is dead within a few minutes, not because it drained the battery but because the amps drawn are too high so the battery only works nearly fully charged. I should measure this with a meter because it would be good to know how much I am saving.

6lbs to contain the whole camera is fairly close to Arri's 5lbs Mini. The last big weight I could pull (almost 1lbs) is the back focus mechanism. It is a beautiful heavy metal over engineered part which does what it is designed to do very well but it isn't needed. Any mount focus issues could be solved via shims (ask the black magic boys they deal with this a lot). But this pound is A LOT of work, the sensor would then need a new part to hold it in place, it's really hard to take the sensor apart it's all fragile ribbon cables. If I ever go this far, it would be to squeeze an E Mount in there but this is one of those projects I rate very hard.

So we forget that part, just like the dream of moving the power supply, the real end goal is something useable not something in development.

I literally created a DVXuser account just so I could see what this Frankenstein experiment looks like. Seems like a very cool project, Are you thinking of 3D printing some sort of new housing for the Camera?

I’m no electrical engineer nor do I understand the mechanics involved in creating a camera, but I wonder if it would ever be possible to swap a sensor onto a different camera body and what that would entail? Example if you put a CCD sensor from the F35 and put it onto the main board of an FX6 haha. Like I said I have no clue how these geniuses glue this stuff together and make it work.

Looking forward to seeing your progress. :)

I think we can say without A LOT of money no one is ever going to reverse engineer the Protocols and Language Sony used to control the F35 CCD.

All I am doing is the same as PC Case hacking, I have 2mm carbon fiber panels I am cutting up to make a box. Carbon Fiber Layup is pretty cool for making custom shapes, I have the fabric and glue I just need to put some practice in. The good thing about making a case for the camera is it can be easily removed and updated.

It's interesting but all my research leads me to believe these two line up nearly perfectly. Swappable mount from the front of the camera?
