i know that if you swich the gain of a camera to -3db or -6db you can reduce the noise and have a cleaner image.
can someone explain me (technically) the relationship between gain and noise, and why a negative number of gain give a cleaner image??

Hmmm... I didn't think you could reduce the gain of an image to less than 0db. I though the settings on the HVX were: 0dB, 3dB, 6dB, 9dB, 12dB
Adding gain results in a noisy image due to the processing of the image and the sensitivity of the imager. So technically, if you can reduce gain and make the sensor even less sensitive then this could lead to less grain.
I personally work at 0db where possible and don't increase gain at all. Pump enough light in and it will look great!
I've had shoots where we needed to increase gain outdoors at night because we couldn't use lights and it looked pants especially as it was SD...
6dB of gain should be equivalent to one stop. The film equivalent of this is 'pushing', and if you understand one concept the other is similar.
First, all sensors in digital cameras will have some level of noise. Even with the lens cap on you don't get pure black because some of the sensors on the CCD are picking up voltages from things like ambient static electricity, collapsing stars, I love lucy reruns, etc.
If you add 6dB of gain, you're literally doubling those stray voltages. If you double the amount of available light instead, these voltages stay the same. That's why if things are dark, it's usually better to add more light than boost the gain.
The HVX doesn't support gain below 0. It would be a cool firmware upgrade to be able to go to -3 or -6, but really it's not a noisy camera except in poor lighting conditions.
