64-bit Windows XP Pro

Yeah, I met the west-coast Avid tech higher-up and grilled him mercilessly on that. Even worse, they won't certify the Symphony Nitris that *just came out* to run within 64bit, let alone to actually have it be 64bit and certified to run on AMD...

Keep in mind, I'm not even talking about re-writing anything (other then hardware drivers), for the application itself all they need to do is write to the standards MS has had in place for probably over a year (and maybe do a little testing and bugfixing) and they could see a good improvement (plus much more addressable memory). Compositing and 3D applications that run their old 32-bit application under 64-bit see as much as a 20% performance improvement.

Avid is finally starting to make some progress though, I think there's supposed to be a 64bit native DS Nitris soon.

But Avid's narrow range of very specific configurations they'll certify and the way those systems are almost always behind-the-times power-wise is Avid's biggest failing, if you ask me... especially in the lower-end products. Xpress Pro and Xpress Pro HD are actually pretty damn good for the price, but if you have trouble and aren't running it on an overpriced and out-of-date HP you're pretty much out of luck.

The Avid Xpress Pro program won't even install on the 64 bit XP. I bought a shiny new Dell workstation with the 64 bit XP, Avid Xpress Pro wouldn't even install on it. When I tried to install, it came up with a message that said the OS was incompatible and dumped out of the installation program. I had to get the 32 bit version, reformat the HDD and reinstall everything. Then the Avid went in fine.

Avid Xpress Pro install 32 bits drivers, so, on Windows XP x64, 32 bits drivers aren't compatible so... Avid Xpress Pro won't work on x64 until a x64 version of Xpress Pro will be available and I'm sure that Avid will not lose their time to this unstable system.
