60p

Does the F3 currently have 60p in 1920 x 1080 (not 1440 x 1080) over HD-SDI? If not, when is it's planned release? The only specs I can find for 60p currently is the 1440 x 1080 mode.

What you're reading are record mode specifications. The PMW-F3 cannot *internally* record a true 1080 60p signal.

The PMW-F3 can output 1080 60p over dual link or 3G SDI - but not over single link SDI. The fact is, it's too much bandwidth/data for single link SDI. No single link SDI system handles 1080 60p.

But yes, you can get 1080 60p from the PMW F3 over dual link or 3G SDI - for external recording.

I know this... What I'm asking is if the 1080p mode out the Dual link is 1440 or 1920? According to the Sony website it's 1440, but I'm just double checking if anybody knows for 100% sure. And what is the color space? I'm assuming 4:2:2.

Short answer: No. the dual link output is a clean never compressed 1920x1080 image, even at 60p. And it's 4:2:2 10 bit

As I stated before, what you''re reading is a record mode specification.

I'm assuming you're looking at this page, or one like it: http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/mkt-cinematography/mkt-cinematographyvideo/product-PMWF3K/

The header where you're finding that 1440x1080 59.94P is under "Recording Frame Rate"

Meaning, those are record modes - it's not relevant to the external outputs.

1440x1080 is not a valid frame size for SDI transport.

The dual link SDI is an "output" not a "record mode." yes, you can attach a recorder to it, but technically it's just considered an output, and the specifications you're quoting only apply to internal recording.

The dual link is a clean never compressed 1920x1080 signal. Even at 60p. At 60p it's 422 10bit.

60p 1080 clean man that sound awesome (i thought it was 60i only) man if sony would lower the price to 10k, they would KILL the competition! So with s-log it'd be 13k $US and a 5k $ US recorder and scarlet would have serious problems (cuz at 60p, you have 2k only AND its not even S35. . . )

Hydarnes - The catch is to record 1080 60p you need a high end external recorder. The Cinedeck, Gemini or new Sony SRW1 will do it, but with drives, expect any of those to set you back close to 10k if not more.

If you can deal with being tethered to a desktop tower, there are capture cards out there from AJA and Blackmagic that cost from $600 to $2,000 that will do the job. Of course, that tethers you, and is really only cheaper if you already have the tower.

But as an owner operator, think of it this way - don't bother getting that stuff. But when the client needs it, rent it, and bill it. The F3 offers so much flexibility to do different things for different projects.

Okay... I just thought 1080/60p wasn't even an option in internal recording. So why is it even listed as "Recording Frame Rate"?

My best guess is it's a typo, and is simply incorrect. That frame rate is not an active selectable option on the camera.

This whole discussion occurred on this board back when the F3 manual was first released. Right down the the 60p confusion.

But rest assured the camera outputs a true 1920x1080 60p image over dual link.

Hi,

I am looking into investing into an external recorder for my sony f3...I would love the recorder to do 2 main things, recording of s-log in 4:2:2 in prores codec and recording of 1080p 60frames...is the PIX240 capable of doing that? if not...what are the current external recorders that are able to do that apart from gemini and cinedeck which are both a bit too expensive for my taste....

Why do you want S-Log into 4:2:2? You're not going to be getting the full benefits of it.

And no, from what I can tell the Pix240 only has a single HD-SDI, you need dual link to record 60p.

Hi,

it seems that it is cheaper to ger a brand new fs-100 in order to be able to shoot 1080p 60p rather than getting those super expensive and sometimes cumbuersome external recorders....why S-LOG into 4:2:2? well sometimes 4:4:4 is overklill for some of the projects that we are doing and since 4:2:2 s-log single sdi out will be enabile with the new firmware upadte of the sony f3 - that seems like a really good option in terms good disk requirements and quality...
