60i in 24p timeline....

And, for my 24pA example, how much flexibility can be specified... that is, if I have, say, mixed 24p and 24pA on a 60i timeline, will it remove 2332 pulldown from the 24pA parts and insert 2323 pulldown, leaving the 24p parts alone?

It'll remove advanced pulldown from 24pA clips and normal pulldown from 24p clips. After that, it's all 24p on the timeline. You'll never know the difference

To preview out to an NTSC monitor, it inserts 2:3 pulldown. To render out, you can choose either.

And, most importantly, does one have any control over when in the chain processing is applied? Can one choose to, say, apply filters to native frames before interpolation or to generated frames after?

You can choose from several resampling options, inlcuding no resampling.

Can you just explain to me how the "drop every other frame OR merge/blend" choice is handled, and how much flexibility there is in the choice?
No, 'cause I don't understand it all that well. I know that there's "supersampling" available as an option, and you can choose that when it has to generate new frames from fields it can choose to blend or merge or interpolate fields... there are lots of options, but I'd have to leave it to David or Spot or some other Vegas wizard to explain all those options.

From what I understand it will remove pulldown if necessary. So if you were on a 60i timeline, it would remove 24pa pulldown from the 24pa file and then insert 2-3 pulldown on the fly. For the 2323 files it would leave them alone. Keep in mind this isn't a definitive answer, as the only people who could definitively answer the question are Sonic Foundry/Sony engineers.

Don't know how to answer that. As far as 24p pulldown is considered, all frames are native. If you're on a 24p timeline, there is no such thing as pulldown during the edit process, so all frames are native (even if that means they're reverse-telecine'd out of a 2323 file). The "generated" frames are only generated during a final render, to whatever timeline or codec or whatever you render to. So the effects would seem to be applied to the native frames, and then intermediary frames (if any) are generated thereafter. But again, that would be something that can only truly be answered by a Sony programmer.

Right, that seems clear; I was thinking more of the mixed timelines (24p on 60i, 30p on 24p, etc).... Any Vegas programmers around?

I don't remember if there is such a thing as a 30p DVD clip. Might just have to render it as 60i.

I rendered out a 30p clip on a 30p timeline to an mpeg2 using the standard "DVD Architect NTSC video stream" preset and then changed the field order to "progressive only".

I brought this clip into DVD Architect expecting that when I "prepared" the DVD files it would tell me under the "messages" screen that it would have to reencode this video because it is not a standard DVD compliant mpeg2 file or something similiar to that nature. To my surprise it had no messages. I burned the disc and it plays great on the dvd player. That is good information to know, because I had no knowledge of how to handle 30p clips for dvd use. I had never messed with them before (i've been a 24p guy all the way until now). Anyway, just thought I would share my finding. I'm guessing that since it let me do it....it is as compatible an mpeg2 for dvd players as any other (24p or 60i) clip......because once it is authored with architect it is inherently no different.... But that is just my assumption.
