60D or AF-100

as a matter of curiosity are you seeing moire at 1080 as well as 720 on your 60d?

your case may not be with the camera. as with certain material, upholstery, etc. youre going to see moire with ANY camera.
but i did a side by side test with a number of cameras a few weeks ago and still saw noticeable moire at 1080 on a 60d with siding and shingles of a house

I have not shot at 720 so I don't know. The Canons are much more prone to moire than the GH2 or the AF100...this much I do know. There are a number of reasons an aperature in the adapter itself is a bad idea, if you don't believe me do a search on this site, cinema5D, dvinfo etc and you will find that echoed. It is pretty well known that there isn't a great EOS to m43 adapter yet and I'm suprised that this seems new to people on this board. Like I said there is a company developing an $800 EOS to M43 electronic adapter but not certain it is out yet.

Yes I've considered I may have to buy that, but it seems ridiculous that I have to jump to another DSLR...that doesn't bode well for Canon. I'm testing finer woven suits to see if switching jackets for differant shots would work :S

"OK, switch to the medum close-up suit now"

You should clearly look at the gh2 as an alternative to both of them. The stock gh2 1080p was already very good, but now with the hack it has become amazing. The other mode also have gained a lot. Some people might not believe it but the 720p mode (60 fps) could be considered higher resolution than the Canon 1080p. You also get proper monitoring through hdmi. If you don't intend to use external recording it is the best image quality (large sensor) under a Sony F3. The price is so low (if you can put your hand on one) you can experiment and buy some Canon adapter for your Canon lens.

I am a Nikon pro photographer, who has bought a Canon 7d for video and now invested in a gh2. What I mean is that I have no fanboism in me. If a tool is better then I will recommend it and until Canon updates its Hdslr line, I think the gh2 is clearly above. The last thing I forgot is no moire, aliasing and overheating. I feel liberated since a bought this little gem. Look at the video below just for a taste of it (shot mostly in 1250 and 640 iso). Now if they can hack the hdmi port... something like the sound device Pix 220 and gh2 would be insane.

Honestly I do not know whats the hype behind this video, I have seen similar and better. Finally the lack of any kind of stabilization in this project truly makes it seen very very unprofessional. Every shot is a micro jitter mess

This Video was show with Canon Dslrs

I love how people instantly jump on videos like this as proof that a CAMERA is responsible for the nice imagery and dynamic range (and therefore superior to other cameras), instead of the lighting, camera work, editing, acting...

I realize both are capable of great images...I'm getting some great images myself. The point is that the moire is becoming an issue for me because I have a charactor wearing a suit, if I didn't have this outfit I wouldn't care about switching. Switiching to another DSLR seems silly unless I'm upgrading and getting better audio. GH2 vs 60D vs af100 vs whatever image-wise isn't that important to me, as I know I can get great images from any of these tools. But that being said, I may have to end up switching to the GH2 if my budget doesn't allow for more and I can't resolve the moire/suit issue.

I've had a couple rare moire issues on the GH2 but no big deal. I'd assume the processing algorithms are far better on AF100. Keep your 60D & complete with a GH1 or 2, imo.

jesus on a boat. i better always have my rig on a steadicam. otherwise im just unprofessional.

facepalm.

Well this time I must agree with you, you are completely correct & 100% unprofessional..... Stop kidding yourself buddy, there's no reason at all for the whole video to not have any form of stabilization, I mean it's not even camera movement it's basically someone handholding the camera and what you see are jitters..... Yeah sometimes it's fine, but not always...

Let me take that facepalm from you....

Also regarding Moire, many times it can show up in any camera. Gh2, Af100 Heck I have seen it on all cameras.

euuu... Look at my avatar and you will see that I am all in lighting and should you see more of my work (studio or natural light photography) you would see how I attach importance to all of these aspect. As a professional photographer and hope someday cinematographer (learning to become a pro) to a certain level of camera image quality, it is the man behind the camera who is the more important, his know how in lighting, composition, staging etc... I have seen many shot done on the dslr that were better than from the red. Coming from a not so rich country, when I see how people will buy such expensive gear because they think it is going make their photography or cinematography better... because they can. While they lack any sort of know how about light, I mean the basic is sickening. Because in my country to buy the prosumer level like the 7D, you have to work very hard. The average salary is 3 to five time less and the gear is usually about 50% more.

But if for $ 800 I can have a true hd camera without aliasing/moire, overheating and good monitoring... even before the hack, then I won't hesitate to use and recommend it. With such a low price the OP can invest in a good set of lighting equipment, pro audio equipment, even some lens like canon fd, etc. If tomorrow Canon comes out with a super successor he will be able to sell the gh2 for just a small lost. Now with the hack, god knows what can happen. Some shortfall are being addressed by the hack already, like for me the underexposed areas where muddy, because of compression. The higher bitrate is making it much better now.

The example you are showing is a very professional and very high quality staged version against a run and gun one. The gh2 version was handheld in a run and gun way. If you read the shooter he explained that he could not even get hold of a stabilizer. On the contrary there are quite a lot of money and time that was put in the Canon one. I can't download it but it seems a little soft. I am not saying it is bad, because it is much better and I prefer any-day such a work than many clip I have seen done on higher-end Red, sony F3 etc.

yes sir. thank you vision_filmz. it has been established that at some point or another most modern cameras may experience some degree of issue with moire.
BUT it is also an established and recognized fact that as an artifact of their design, canon's existing DSLR cameras will encounter video moire easier and to a greater degree than many other comparable cameras.

and no amount of your ongoing "well... you suck too", fan-boy defense is going to change or lessen that fact

and neither will complaining about other components of the production that you clearly have no information about... i guess to stand up to your criteria. if im going to present a clip to feature a certain cameras performance, it better be on a steadicam, in perfect light. be a budgeted music video or feature. with post effects and grading. otherwise, the clip is immediately rendered invalid and unprofessional.

like you, i very often like the look of what the canons produce. and in many situations they are the perfect tool for the job. but for many of us. who shoot in a variety of situations. we cant live with the fear that we may encounter a guy in a herringbone suit walking by a sided house during one of our shoots.

Exactly, you can make every camera show moire. Some will need resolution chart at certain frequencies to do that... and other just go out your house and shoot some brick wall or rooftop etc... I can't understand how people can become such fan boy. The OP has some issues and what some are telling him, that it is not that important, he should shoot like this, or change the clothes of the character etc... What the heck what do know about what can become very problematic issues and for what.............. that he use Canon. Do any of these people feel they are helping the guy when there is a ready solution in the gh2 for $ 800. He could buy it, try it and return it if he wants. The gh2 cost less than many audio, monitor or filming gear. So what is the problem with those guys.

I had only one bad experience since I bought the gh2 and was to hold the Canon 7d just afterward, it really felt like a toy, but boy the rest is very good. Just impatient to try the hack.

vision_filmz, you honestly can't directly compare that GH2 video to the Canon video. Obviously budget and production variables are simply too great between them. The only significant variable is looking at the resolution/sharpness of the picture rather than the aesthetics of each in terms of lighting/production, and in that regard the GH2 wins hands down. Neither video shows the Canon vs Gh2 moire issue, but it is well documented that the GH2 wins in this regard as well. The canon wins in latitude and Z axis perspective (the latter being my subjective opinion).

I wish I had a GH2, but I still love my 60D and the fact that there isn't an affordable real aperture controllable mount for Canon lenses (not talking about the Kippon... I want aperture to be within the lenses) makes upgrading to a GH2 not an option. Hoping Canon will pull through in their next generation.
