5K iMac or New Mac Pro?

Thanks guys. Hard as it is, it sounds like waiting for TB3 to arrive is probably a sensible move, it seems almost as significant an upgrade to computing as USB3 was.
I'd say wait for the next revision of the iMac whether it has TB3 or not, two generations of iMacs have had basically the same graphics card, next one is gonna be a bigger jump. Get the top spec one then and be happy :D

Frankly I think the idea that any update is soon and/or will be a big jump is pretty unlikely. Macs may always be behind in the GPU game given their much more sparse support, vs every brand new GPU being immediately supported in windows. There is currently no new generation of CPUs to even put in a new iMac, and Mac pros have proven Apple has ditched their usual update cycle at least for that line so who knows how long it will be before they update it.

I think it is a gamble whether Apples next line will even have TB3. They just released a new Macbook they could've put it in but didn't and windows laptops have had it for over 6 months now. And then it could be a while before the hardware you want comes in TB3...

I'm wondering if they are formulating a hybrid MacBookPro / MacPro system based on TB3 - along similar lines of the Stealth Blade / Core system from Razer. So ditching the MacPro, flogging you a high spec laptop with one GPU and then an additional GPU unit you leave at the office.

I think too TB3 is a massive step forward like USB3 was, loads of storage vendors are on it already - just need adoption from the big players

This article makes it sound like the new generation of graphics cards is quite a big leap from last generation and that they are coming this year:

And as iMac are regularly updated in October/November more or less each year, I think it's quite likely that there will be a new 5K iMac with those new cards later this year.

If I could (personally I have no choice but to wait for economical reasons) wait I would definitely try to hold out for the next gen 5K iMac.
