5dmkII vs 7d

I'm sure this has been beaten with a stick many times but as time goes on people ideas change on what is good and what isn't. I looked at a 5d MKII and a 7d today and the sale man said that the 5d is the way to go because it has a much larger sensor in the camera by far then the 7d. The 7d is the size of a postal stamp and the 5d is 35mm size.

If you are shooting a film and need that film look and have the time to set up your shots which camera would you go with for the best footage? I'm looking at a 10 day film shoot and will be at the location for seven weeks giving me a lot of time to do pick up shots. This is a short film and will be using this short film to go after funding to make it into a feature film and of course if that doesn't happen then the short film will go to festivals. We have a few theaters setup to show the film. The film running time is around 30 minutes. Yes it will be a compete short story but a short story that can be turn into a feature film.

Both have the potential of giving you that film look. The 5D, however, with its larger sensor gives you additional light sensitivity...thus it'll handle better in low light (though the 7D isn't too shabby either--it's APS-C sensor's about the equivalent of Super35) and add to your bokeh. If using EF lenses, you'll be taking advantage of the lens' actual focal lengths, as opposed to the 1.6 crop mode of the 7D.

The 7D is closer to S35 motion picture as noted above. And has full res output for a monitor while shooting.

If it were me I would hold of on any camera purchase until after Nov 3 unless it is absolutely necessary.
Or rent in the mean time.

Thanks guys - I'm not filming until the first week of March so I have time. Just got to get things in order. Been shooting with the HVX200A for the past few years but after seeing some of the footage from the Canon been thinking of using one of those on this project instead.

There are advantages to the full frame 5D, mostly a wider field of view (so you don't need to back up as far to get everything in a shot, and also leads to even shallower depth of focus). But is it not necessarily "better" than the APS-C sized cameras.
Remember, super 35mm film as well as the high end video cameras (RED, etc) all use the same 1.6x crop as the 7D and its siblings. The larger sensor is cool, but its necessity is arguable.

Meanwhile, I highly recommend you read through this thread:

I think overall the 7D is a better choice to match the kind of depth of field you see in film, but depending on your situation you might want to shoot on a 5D for the improved high-ISO performance.

Both overheat. 5D isn't superb in lowlight for video cus of the heating of the sensor, only very short burts you can hit ex 3200. You can actually buy 5dmk2's that are astro modfied with fans, but then you're probably just better off with a NEX5n for a bit less... ;-)

Consider a newer Canon DSLR model if you're not into photography.

While that's true, even at something like 1250 ISO the 5D is cleaner. I don't shoot at high ISO's if I can help it.
