5DMKII--24fps Retimed footage

Here's some retimed 5D MK II footage I shot the other day and ran through compressor. My personal opinion is that it works fairly well but there will always be ghosting and interpolated frames. Works ok in motion but blended frames can be seen if you're looking for them.

Workflow:

--Converted all camera QT files to ProRes 720 (easier to edit)
--Edited 30p timeline
--Saved as a self-contained QT
--imported into Compressor and retimed to 24fps and exported to ProRes 720 24p
--Compressed to h264 QT and uploaded to vimeo

It's gettin' very difficult to ignore this camera... the only way I could see myself going Nikon D400 is if the manual controls are unparelleled. The Canon still overs several more benefits: like the ability to adopt just about any lens to the camera...

Its getting hard to ignore the consistency of the image. I truly believe in my heart that canon skimped on the 24p on purpose, because they knew they would not have moved another canon a1.

If canon knows whats good for them they will answer the voice of the people and give us our 24p at this price range or the competitors will.

It's gettin' very difficult to ignore this camera... the only way I could see myself going Nikon D400 is if the manual controls are unparelleled.

Hopefully Nikon will give better manual controls and a better codec this time around.

One thing for sure is I don't think I'll end up getting any kind of 35mm adapter that I've been mulling over lately. This quality of footage and low light ability, plus a kick-arse still camera to boot is too much to ignore anymore. Seems like a much better investment since you can always sell the body when the next iteration comes out.

I agree that it is a very likely possibility that the absence of 24p was done to protect the A1 and H1 line. The silly thing is that you have to use Nikon lenses to get manual exposure control. Canon sure shot themselves in the foot on that aspect of the mark 2. Just watch, they'll come out with the next Digital Rebel and it'll have a 1080 24p (embedded in 60i without flags like the HV20 though) video mode, but not the 5D mk2. It wouldn't surprise me.

Footage looks great Elton. Feel free to share some more, I'd love to see what else you can do with the mark 2.

I haven't look at this footage yet (still d/ling) but even with manual controls, you still have to deal with the image skew and wobble when going hand held or on long lenses. This is a problem in many situations and will play a big part (IMO) in keeping this as a more novelty video camera and not something that is a serious contender for day to day work.

That's why I'm keeping my P2 Camera + Adapter. The HPX170 + Letus Ultimate combo is pretty damned awesome and definitely a money makin' machine. I've seen request for the 5D MKII and it's only been a few months since release, it's gonna get more and more popular.

Regardless of wobble and skew, issues as they may be, it's hard to deny the image. And most audience members won't really care either unless it's an uncharacteristic amount (I.E. me trying to handheld an 85 ~ 135mm lens. Nobody should have to suffer through that.)

Retimed to 24P like this, while a headache more than not when dealing with Audio Sync I bet, it's pretty friggin' nice...

even if Nikon's D400 sees a host of manual controls it'll be hard to not want the MKII Specifically for the lens options you get, man. I'm itchin' to slap my Contax Zeiss set on the MK II.

No doubt at all. I think the video division probably had a hand in telling the DSLR guys how far they could go with the camera. I'm sure the ability to switch to 24hz is built right into the firmware, just not enabled. :huh:

It's silly and kind of perversely cool all at once. I looooove using Nikon and Zeiss lenses on this camera. Something about the way Nikon lenses render color and contrast, combined with the amazing full frame sensor and DIGIC 4 processing just does it for me.

There are lots of cameras out there now with plenty of spec appeal (HPX 300, EX3 etc) but very few have the sex appeal of the 5D2's image. I recognize that these aren't necessarily apples to apples, but the fact that the superior DSLR image is now basically extracted and translated to motion is astounding to me.

Makes sense to me. I still feel there's a whole helluvalot to be said for CCD cameras with adapters. I hate the fact that CMOS cameras make you worry about how much or what kind of motion is going on in your shot. It just seems asinine to have to worry about skew and wobble all the time, but I guess that's just the price to be paid right now for a richer image.

Amazing how many filmmakers want to just go ahead and deal with the limitations of 5DMKII and shoot a film with it.

At the end of the day, it's all about the feeling and atmosphere of the image.

I really haven't had any sync sound issues with conversions. Compressor seems to get it right without needing to modulate the audio separately.

It's kinda funny that one of the biggest turn ons about this camera is how easy it is to use Zeiss, Nikon etc.

I think the truth of the matter is that the Mark II is a huge hit, and in all likelihood, the biggest reason for its runaway success is the video mode. Probably the only thing that will motivate Canon to add some manual control would be if their lens sales drop signifigantly due to the aperture control issue.

Well, between yourself, Hunter, Rich and Matt Bennet I've gone ahead and decided on staying with my HPX170 + Ultimate and picking up an MKii instead. Just makes sense.

That's cool, dude. I'm sure you'll do some cool stuff with the camera. It's smart to always have a CCD cam at this stage though.
