[5DMK3] Aftermarket battery grip owners

Hey guys, any owners of aftermarket battery grips for MK3 out there? Just ordered my MK3 this morning after selling my 7D last night.

Want to hear opinions of all types of the grips you guys own and how it's holding up or comparison to what you've owned before. I'm looking at the brands of Pixel Vertax, Vello and Meike.

I'd prefer a rear door for convenience of battery swap similar to what I had on my 7D. I also have a 60d with a side magazine tray like the current Canon MK3 grips. Few things about each:

Rear door type (7D)
- convenience of battery swap
- had play when I tilt up/down when mounted on my monopod/tripod holding the camera's grip.

Side door magazine (60D/5DMK3)
- need to set camera down or on tripod to swap batteries
- very little play, if none at all compared to above

The 7D version I had was brand "Aputure", while 60D was "Meike".

The off brand battery grips are exact copies of the Canon grips so you won't find a choice of side door or rear door for accessing the batteries.

Alex, I went through 3 different types of aftermarkets.

Ebay from China batteries, although cheap were hit/miss. Half of them no longer maintain a full charge in under a year. Other half are still great.

Also bought 3 Power2000 fro amazon, 1 won't retain charge and no luck in response from manufacture.

Last 8 I bought were Amazon Wasabi brand. Has 3 yr warranty and all are still working great today.

All used for video use for all day event, so recording starts from morning and ends at night. Thus I need a solid grip to swap batteries from.

Ordered the Meike brand side loading for $65. It's suppose to be the "NEW" version, that no longer drains the battery while camera is in off mode found in Pixel Vertax version.

I do use aftermarkets for my monitor.

Exactly. With paying clients, it's a tough idea for me to grasp using something that could fail suddenly and lose footage. I'll pay the premium for the batteries.

However, with a monitor, oh well. Besides, a lot of them are starting to come with aftermarkets as part of the kit anyway.

Grip works good. Reads my Wasabi brand batteries perfectly and haven't noticed any discharge after two full days. $65 well spent and I don't have the slop that I got from my rear door grip that I had on my 7D.
