5D3 with ML Raw - Middle Gray?

Since cameras vary and ML raw is a wildcard, what percentage are people using for middle gray with ML raw recording Rec.709 (or even better, using BMDFilm as a starting point)?

I'm not sure I understand your question. For capturing footage or editing in post?

When shooting much of the time I use ETTR - though not always.

For post it is really to taste.

Well, it's a bit of a trick question. As I'm sure you know, raw footage from the 5D3 defaults to Rec.709 in Resolve. But many people including myself are changing the colorspace in Resolve to BMDFilm. My ultimate goal is to build a camera profile for my Sekonic L-478D meter with Sekonic's DTS software. I want the meter to give me my readings based on their values in BMDFilm, not Rec.709.

To do this, I need to nail down the optimal percentage for middle gray in this camera when shooting raw (and changing colorspace to BMDFilm) as it appears on the scopes. As I understand, it could be anywhere from 35% to 55%.

BTW, I use ML's ETTR Hint all the time, and it's great. I'm just looking for more precision and consistency.

Agreed. The best way to approach it is using BMD film or Cinema DNG.

I used the ACES workflow for my project and have found that vastly better than the ResolveRGB color space. The great thing with ACES is you can change your ODT for whatever your desired output and then render after just a single global change.

I understand what you mean about precision and consistancy. I don't know if there is a way to adjust all shots to get a uniform middle grey as a starting point in grading but that might be a good thing depending on the project.

As an experiment, I shot a Sekonic Exposure Profile Target II which gave me a wide range of exposure values in the frame. Following the ETTR hint on the raw histogram put the spot meter box (hovering over the middle gray chip) at -3.7EV.
