5D3 Raw post-processing options - Pros and Cons

Of course it depends on the length of what you are creating, for me AE+ACR produces great quality for little time and effort. 10-bit is plenty for my web targeted content. ProRes supports 12-bit, so no loss in bit depth after de-Bayer and plenty of color info to color correct. I'd even pay the full $1k for Resolve (since Pocket cam isn't out) if it produced higher quality vs ACR... (Check tutorials on YouTube- it's not a great CogSci-based GUI, however after tutorials isn't hard).

Pocket Camera has been shipping for a few weeks, I have one. But, it does not come with Resolve. The 2.5K and Production will come with Dongles.

As far as sharpening goes, I'd be interested in seeing a comparison with the new CinemaDNG debayer sharpening settings in R10. I'm still not convinced that ACR does a better job, and the noise reduction clearing up moire etc puts off that it does.

Ah no Resolve with Pocket- thx for the info- will visit a buddy in Hollywood when I have some free time and do some tests with 5D3 RAW footage.

These guys do temporal processing (I'm pretty sure) : http://darkenergyforaftereffects.com/
Would prefer to use Resolve over AE though (ancient, slow tech, limited GPU accel). I'd rather pay for Resolve and work mostly in real-time than upgrade from CS6 to CC for PPro and AE, but only if the quality is same or preferably better. Don't have a lot of free time to shoot lately, so a speedy workflow is helpful (finishing up an advanced video app for iOS- lots of real-time effects for both audio and video).

Or you can just download Resolve Lite 10 and work with it anyways..... Its free

Lite is limited- no noise reduction (does full version have advanced de-Bayer options?). From other forums, doesn't sound like Resolve's NR is as good as Neat Video?
ACR's noise reduction is excellent when done at the same time as de-Bayer and sharpen. I don't believe Neat Video can't match it in preserving detail when done after de-Bayering. Ideally NR and sharpen happen at same time as de-Bayer (using modern reconstruction algorithms).

Dont get the fascination with noise reduction.... Expose your image correctly. I just shot a corporate in raw and the image looks fine in Resolve ten. Imo.... Stop nit picking especially when delivering to the web.

R10's noise reduction update's are plenty enough to never have to leave the application to go to Neat Video, outside of very very complicated scenes which are probably doomed to begin with.

Being able to separate RGB channels to independently assign noise reduction to each is also beneficial. It wasn't like this in R9, R10 goes well beyond.

Perhaps you misunderstand- I write image processing software for a living (use 5D3 and FS700 for doc work and learning about cameras/tech for day job). Ultimately the art and emotion are what matters with content, and it's good to fully understand what tools are available and how they work to provide the most options for the final work. No worries for the folks not into the intimate low-level algorithm details- I find it interesting and fun (I do NR in real-time using the GPU on iPhone/iPad. Figured out what math to use by reading lots of papers). Also helps understand what tools to use and when for production.

Have shot friends in bands playing in very low light, for example The House of Blues on Sunset and the Beverly Hills Hotel bar: can't light it- must shoot what's there. IR light could work with special cameras, but color resolution would of course be limited (could use IR as a luma boost though, mixed in with de-noised color).

Sounds cool- will have to visit buddy with the full version of Resolve and check it out. Thanks for the info. Are you using R10 with 5D3 RAW footage or with higher resolution cameras?
