5D3 - harsh condition re-grading holds up surprisingly well

"Shot with a production 5D mkIII in 1080/24P, 24-105mm f4L, 5000ISO , Standard picture style, regular Noise reducion."

Pretty nice for 5000ISO.

I always wondered if the fact that the sensor is so much bigger than m4/3 plays a role all of these "it's so soft" comments under EVERY piece of footage posted here. Correct me if I'm wrong but if I wanted to get the same results I get from a 2.8 aperture on a 5d wouldn't I need a 1.4 on m4/3? In other words the sensor is smaller so you have increased dof at the same apertures.

yes, but even in the bits that are in focus, the 5D3 seems soft (actually, nothing, ever, seems to be really in focus)

I agree about the softness. But it does help to give it a very distinctive look that I can appreciate.....like different types of filmstock.

^^^ True about the film stock thing. I have been shooting with GH2 for the past 2 months or so and while I love the resolution the handling of the camera is annoying to me. I like the WYSIWYG lcd screen on the canons, not having to use adapters and changing my aperture on a canon body then putting it back on my gh2, lack of green shift, and the lack of the annoying banding lines that shows up at high isos. When my 5D Mark III arrives this afternoon I'm sure the GH2 will collect some dust for a while.

Same here, except I sold mine and don't miss it at all, btw I don't think it looks soft, very pleasing look without much sharpening artifacts.

If you check the article, you'll see this is just a random piece of footage that Stu from Prolost took from another user's demo video, and re-graded on his own. I don't think the focus was really a concern. The main point here is how great it looks re-graded.

Looks like the ALL-I is really helping. I didn't know it would make such a difference, considering it's still H.264. Me and H.264 don't have such a nice relationship...

Yes, the footage looks soft when compared to the GH2 and other Panasonic Video cameras, but I can honestly say I like the look. Shooting with an Hpx-500 with plenty of lighting can give you some nice sharp footage, but it is difficult to achieve a shallow DOF with that camera, so a lot of times everything is in focus and it just looks weird to me. Now if you were shooting a Music video in a studio then that would be great, but in real world environments I actually prefer the softness of the Canon cameras.

I just downloaded the original and graded it in FCPX with magic bullet. Come on guys, this is ISO 5000 shot under crazy light source. I pushed it pretty hard and have not seen much degradation. 5000 ISO!!! It looks soft because the Cam Op is wide open and not focusing very well. I like what I see in the NLE and my 5Dmk3 will be in my hands by Monday latest. 5000 ISO!!!!!! Incredible!

It's likely it's a bit soft like all the 5D3 footage around at present because the sharpness has been dialled down in camera like you need to do on the 5D2 to avoid moire. I suspect that most 5D2 users who pick up a 5D3 are immediately dialling in the same picture style settings that they have been using on the 5D2 perhaps even using the voodoo ISOs 160/320/640 etc This is a new camera & all these settings need to be tested & evaluated again. I am keeping mine on the default settings until I get a chance to properly set it up & I am not seeing that the image is soft.

It wouldn't surprise me if the camera's nr processing is contributing to the softness. Crazy to see next to no noise at this iso.

I don't get all the comments on softness. I don't see it. I think it's really sharp at the focal point relative to any 5Dm2 footage I've shot. If you consider the ISO, it looks incredible to me. What you all are calling softness is exclusively shallow depth of field IMHO.

Cheers,
Pete
