5D2 HDMI 480p output in recording mode

The HDMI output of the Canon 5D2 drops to 480p the moment you hit record. This is terrible for using field monitors. I am wondering if this is possible to fix in the firmware i.e. bring the HDMI output to 1080p in recording mode? Thanks

Not possible as it's a limitation of one Digic 4 processor. The 7D has 2.

But most people who complain about it are actually using a lilput type monitor that never gives full HD anyway (not saying that's you ;) ). They confuse the native resolutions with the max input resolution.

I'm afraid you're stuck with SD output, during record, with the 5DMKII :(

Generally speaking you should be OK...unless it's something super critical. Also having a monitor with focus assist can help. 5D might be known for super shallow DOF but if you can close it down a stop or two and balance things out a bit more. The less critical the shot in terms of shallow DOF, the better off you'll be.

Everybody who has the 5D has to deal with this in some capacity, so you'll be just fine.

Kyle, what is focus assist and how does it work? Thanks

I was assuming you'd have some sort of external monitor attached to your 5D that would have an option like that. If not then you're out of luck on that front, otherwise you'll just have to focus like normal. Typically these monitors would have some sort of peaking system or focus assist that would outline what's in focus with a red tinge...making it easier to see what's in focus and what's not.

I don't have a monitor yet. Do you have any recommendation for a reasonably priced monitor with focus assist? Thanks!
