5D with Magic Lantern HDR Test #1

Ted Ramasola

Veteran
Test 1 of HDR mode on 5D with Mosaic optical anti alias filter.

Used Nikon 50mm f 1.4, Cinestyle profile at 24P.

Showing 3 out 5 HDR modes 3EV,4EV & 5EV.

This is the first time I tried Magic lantern and this feature was the compelling reason to do so
and so far I find it very interesting indeed.

I think there is an issue with fast motion, (note the passing truck in window) I think this is aggravated by using 24P,
I will do human motion test next and will include 30P so there
will be more frames to interpolate.

I REALLY wish there was a 48fps hack to solve the motion issue. Or even better yet, 72fps for 3 different exposures. :)
I'm pretty sure the hardware couldn't handle even 60 or there would be a firmware update already. I don't think 48 has been tried though. After the Hobbit is released we may see something we like and the extra fps could become useful.

They did try to put in higher rates but the processor can't take it anymore. It can go to 31 FPS but at 32 FPS it freezes. BUT you can go down to 4 FPS at 1 step increments which gives you great low light shots with long motion blur streaks. Good for timelapse like effects.

Basically they made the 5D into a multi framrate cam of 4 to 31 FPS. Also it now has built in has video and still intervalometer!

Test # 2

Test # 2

I included some subtle human movement to test for strobing.

Also I shot this at 30P edited on 24P timeline.

That looks great Ted! I'm having trouble figuring out the scripted HDR workflow that was provided with the donation link. I downloaded wine but was confused where to put the video file, "put RAW.MOV in the work directory". Also, when I ran the split exposure script, it said it couldn't find a path. I tried to manually load up the file but the .mov file was unsupported. Couldn't figure it out for the life of me and hoping someone would shed some light or give an in-depth walkthrough of the steps. As far as I have seen, this is the best method for blending the two exposures. All else looks a bit extreme.

I know how a single typo can screw up Andrei. The directory to place the RAW.MOV is actually the WORKFLOW directory, not work directory. hope that helps.
