5D users IS lens dilemma

I own 16-35/2.8 II, 50/1.4 and 85/1.8 atm. Video 60% stills 40%. I need IS lens for handheld stuff for video. Doesn't matter which brand.

Ideal set for my video needs would be (if existed) 16-24/2.8 and 24-105/2.8 IS. The Canon 50/1.4 and 85/1.8 for stills and the rare situations where the super DOF is needed in video.

So as you can see, two zooms would be great. The one from the longer end with IS. It's way easier to get steady footage under 35mm without IS.

I love my 16-35/2.8 II but I can sell it if the situation needs it.

Would it be stupid to get 600D and 17-50mm F/2.8 VC for example? Wouldn't cost around 100€ more than 24-105/2.8 for example. Then use that camera and lens only for handheld stuff and 5D for wide stuff.

Sounds like a reasonable concept. Thing is, I'm not sure too many folks are fans of the 17-50mm VC. That Tamron is known to be rather soft in the images. The non-VC version is the one everyone thinks is such a great deal.

I understand that you don't care what brand makes the lens (I'm personally a big fan of vintage Nikon), but when it comes to IS, I think the brand DOES matter. I'm not aware of many non-Canon lenses with IS/VC/etc. that was any good. But many some lens enthusiasts can pipe in with more knowledge on the subject.

Sigma 17-50 OS f2.8 is supposedly good.

Or you could grab the 24-105mm f4 IS, which is a great interview lens. I'd recommend that so you won't have to buy a new camera.

Thanks for the replies.

Yeah I read that VC version is bit softer. But is the difference that big in video use?

I meant that I don't care about the brand as I'm not fanboy of any brand. So I'm looking the best option from all brands. All are welcome.

Yes Sigma 17-50 OS 2.8 is good what I've read. It's for crop sensor cameras so if I go with the 600D, it would be a good option. But then again it's 30mm shorter than 24-105/4...

What I'm looking from the IS zoom is that I could use it most of the time for all the shooting in good light. Is that too much to ask from that lens? :p I'm not big fan of tripod use. I rather hold the camera on my hands to get exact views fast and easy. And when using tripod you have to add movement for the frame in post (not talking about interviews).

btw, isn't f4 on 5D pretty much the same as f2.8 on 600D, DOF wise? Just thinking if I'm right that I don't gain anything from the faster lens in the crop...

Yes.

5D + 24-205 with IS = great handheld work.
