Hi all,

I was just tapped to be a DIT on a short film being shot on a Canon 5D Mark II. Coming from the Panasonic P2 world, I'm not quite familiar with the workflow of this camera.

I will need to offload footage with my laptop and hard drives connected. Also, it is likely I will need to set up a monitor for the DP. I have the infamous 7" Marshall monitor (of HVX200 fame) that I could bring, though I don't think the 5D outputs component . . .? The production may rent a bigger one anyway.

Anything else I should know about the camera functions, monitoring, workflow, etc. as it pertains to the DIT role will be very helpful.

Shooting soon, so any crash-course advice would be most appreciated!

The camera shoots in h.264 quicktimes.

They will have to transcode to ProRes if editing on FCPro (automatic with the Canon plugin), or simply convert to Avid DnxHD on import.

Try to shoot flat (Neutral) on the picture styles:

Try to keep the directory structure intact for later import.

Other than that, it is pretty simple.

The 5dmkii only outputs a 480p image during recording over hdmi, so you are out of luck in that regard.

To better use professional monitors, I highly recommend the Black Magic HDM/HD-SDI converter.

If you can, convince them to shoot with the 7d instead. IMO, it is much better in regards to monitoring, and that alone is more than worth it.
