5D over HVX200?

Okay, here is the deal

I still own a HVX200 which I like, despite from the POOR(!!!) lowlight performance...

Now ... I am about to get a 5D and would have someone to buy my HVX from me.

But since I am getting the 5D after I would have sold the HVX, I need your honest and objective opinion.

Will the 5D outperform the HVX?

I am doing musicvideos and imagespots mainly.. So Audio is NOT that much of an issue (and I can still get the Beachtek thingie or an external recorder..)

I am editing on a Macbook Pro 2.33GHz and Finalcut Studio 2

2 years ago I chose between an XH-A1 and an HVX. I chose the XH-A1. Now I have sold it and replaced it with a 5d. Couldn't be happier.

Just my experience.

Well I guess it really depends on what you will be doing. If it's just music videos, controlled narrative spots, then the 5D would work well.

But I think you really would be limited in overall use in the marketplace. I contemplated this once in regards to my XL H1S, but after shooting a project with the 5D, I'm definitely holding on to my XL H1S. It is just so much more versatile and can do a wide variety of projects (but this should not be a surprise, considering it is an actual HD camcorder!).

I'd say just really think about your overall scope of work.

Video cameras are the 'get out of jail free card' for professioal use IMO

The 5d is the cinematic icing on the cake but I wouldnt want to operate professionally with just a 5d

I just shot a project with the 5D MKII. I was kind of wishing I had my HPX170 several times. It really is true, while the 5D MKII is a great camera, it is very limited with sound, no VFR, CMOS rolling shutter (all of my pans had to be pretty slow to avoid the image tearing) and the form factor isn't really made for shooting video at all.

I love both of the cameras I am using currently (5D MKII and the HPX170) but for different reasons and for different types of projects. I would never show up for a shoot for the studios or for my corporate clients with the 5D MKII.

I sold my hvx 200a for another 5d, but i have access to an hvx if need be for long shoot times. but i will just say that I couldn't be happier with the look I'm getting from the 5d over the hvx. at least 50% better imo.

Something that has taken care of nearly all of my audio problems with my 5d.

Also - I understand not wanting to show up to big shoots with a 5d. But lately, showing up to big shoots with my 5d has done nothing but get me bigger shoots. People are weirded out at first, but by the end of the day want one themselves.

Dan, while I totally get where you're coming from, I'd still like to see some of the footage you got from your MKii! You had a really nice setup going.

Sold my hvx200a to buy the 5d. Defintely the right choice for me. Better low light performance, cheaper memory, shooting through glass with no 35mm adapter, smaller covert form factor. That's what was more important to me.

Any chance you can do both?

I have an HVX200a and just took delivery of the 5dmk2 last week. I am definitely keeping both! The 5d is absolutely a phenomenal camera....but there are definite situations I am glad I still have my 200. The low light/high ISO performance of the 5d is a match made in heaven with the 200 as it will supplement the kit with something to shoot in the dark with:) But, as others have said, panning/audio/FR control are essential in this day and age of professional High Def shoots, IMO. Don't get me wrong, I won't show up anywhere without my 5d from now on....BUT, still glad to have the Panny for sure. When the light is there, the HVX images are still absolutely phenomenal!!!! And, in my market, both of these cameras are ahead of the curve....our local networks still have not started placing HD!

I went through the same agonizing decision. I may have actually done it (sold my HVX for the 5d) if I couldn't have pulled this off (buying both). Glad I didn't. If you can swing it, save the HVX and grab a 5d.

BTW...L glass is phenomenal!!! I have shot the XXD class (10d-40d) until the 5d. I bought the kit (with 24-105L). In love with this high end glass! Just went and picked up the 70-200 IS 2.8 on Friday! Phenomenal pics...shot some HDR (bracketed) shots on Saturday with the Fireworks....along side the Panny shooting the show live. Should look Awesome after post.

Good Luck with the decision!

I own both and had have a time where I thought about selling the HVX. But you cant compare this cameras. The picture quality is much more better by 5D MK II,
but the HVX is a"real" Videocam with AF and motorized zoom, audio and a recordtime of more than 12 Minutes in one piece.
Til now I didnt sell my hvx and I think I will keep it. I paid 6000 Euro for it and would get now 2000.
Thats not worth to sell it, if your alternative is, to work alone with the 5D.

I first heard about this camera a couple of days ago and just say a 30 sec spot...WOW! Has anyone attempted to shoot a feature with one yet?

There are dozens of 5D MKII features in the can or in post as we speak, I covered several for a recent article for HD Video Pro Magazine. Nothing in theaters yet that I know of, but some pretty high end stuf is being shot with the 5D MKII.

Cool. When you say High End do you mean massive budgets or... what? It'll be interesting to see any VDSLR feature that steps over the "personal drama" category and into something a bit more universal.

Action, etc. Did you cover any Sci-Fi stuff? Horror I bet.

Thanks for sharin' some tidbits, Dan.

Just decided yesterday to sell my hvx200 for the Mkii and was having similar thoughts as everyone here. I see I made a good decision seeing as my partner also has a hvx and we are going to keep my redrock kit. So with that being said I cant wait to get my mkii. Thanks for your thoughts everyone.

Kholi:

Perosnal drama and comedy mostly. Did cover one period film that has a really nice look, I have only seen stills (frame grabs) but most of the film was shot available light at high ISOs and the grabs look really, really nice, even a bit like Barry Lyndon for the candlelit interiors.

Nothing big budget or action yet, most of the films I covered had budgets from $50k to a few hundre thousand. I am curious what the budget was for that TV movie thing that Rodney Charters, the DP from 24 shot on five 5D MKIIs?

Dan

Me too, actually. And naturally the results. I didn't realize he had used them as secondaries instead of primaries.

I want to see it for sure.

Again thanks for shaing the details. It'll be awesome to see some traditional cinematography and more ambitious stuff on these tiny things.

For what it's worth. I am working as a producer on two low budget features to be shot on the 5d. One will be the first feature film funded by and made for a very popular online video website and the other has guaranteed distribution and a $750,000 budget. Both are dramas. Wish I could say we were shooting action on this thing. Shooting on the first project starts next week.
