5d or GH3

cleaner, maybe, but latitude? Squig and I measured DR on the GH3 and came out with a very low number. Would you post a side by side comparison showing what you mean?

What exactly is the GH3's DR? I've been wanting to know since it came out but haven't found a solid answer. Compared to the mk3?

I don't know which settings Squig used when he shot the clips that I used for the measure, but it came up with only 9.3 stops, which is horrible. That's using the same procedure that gives me 11.3 stops on the Canons and the Nikons (12.3 with the 5D3+RAW), and 11.0 on my NEX-5N (so: it's a very optimistic measure).
That's why I was asking: a 2-stop difference should be pretty obvious. Maybe there are better settings than what Squig used, he shot this test just a few days after receiving the camera.

I don't have any scientific proof but having used both GH3 and 5D3 I don't notice much of a difference by eye when dealing with harsh conditions def not 2 stops different. That should be really noticeable wouldn't it?

Yes, that's why I was asking. In any case, that 2-stop difference is when using a picture style with wide DR, such as, say, Flaat_11. Regular profiles (such as Neutral with contrast=-4) only get around 10 stops max, so, much closer to the GH3.

A 5Dmk3 is a far better camera if you consider the end result and how easy it is to get great looking footage. I have both and find my GH3 to be full of features but also boring to shoot with.

This statement is completely vague and subjective. I grade shows for a living, day in and day out. The 5D can look amazing in the right hands, but awful as well. I've dealt with more awful 5D II and 5D III footage than great. But the good stuff is awesome.

My guess is the Canon glass you use is very good. Micro 4/3 lenses have been limited for quite some time, but I'm seeing incredible results with the Lumix 12-35 and 35-100.

Either way, "boring to shoot with" is completely subjective. Personally, I always yawn at the sight of a 5D, so take that for what it's worth.

Getting hooked up on "DR" defeats the whole purpose of having these amazing cameras. Upstream Colour was shot on a GH2. Did you watch that movie and constantly think to yourself, "wow, if only their camera had better DR." if so, that's sad, lol.

It's on my watch list but I haven't seen it yet. If the story is good, I tend to go with it and forget about everything else. But given the story you have, wouldn't you want your clips to look as good as possible? For me right now that means DR (everything except the first-gen Canons has enough resolution for me, including my cheap toy camera, the NEX-5N)
