5d or GH3

I started out with a D90 5 years ago, the Nikons are a great learning tool but they're also capable of professional results. I came very close to shooting my feature on a D800, there's still a slight chance that I will.

You might want to read some of the D7100 threads before jumping onboard the D5200/D7100 boat...

Nikon D7100 - Video settings

I haven't heard if the D7100 has the same Fixed-Pattern-Noise problem the D5200 has.

Yeah it's the same sensor sans the OLPF but it doesn't have any video aliasing issues. The FPN isn't a major drama, the MK3 has FPN too. It's only an issue if you underexpose and shoot too flat. neat video cleans it up if need be.

They're fairly close, but between the two indoor shots I prefer the color of the bottom shot. ( the top looks a little yellow ) Contrast wise, the top shot has slightly less contrast.

Between the two outdoor shots I prefer the color of the top shot ( again the bottom shot looks a little yellow ), the bottom shot seems contrastier too.

I agree with you,
the first two I like the bottom shot, the second two I like the top shot.

THE RACE IS OVER... Cano.... ML wins!

Magic Lantern has succeed is enabling continuous raw on 1000x CF cards in full HD.

That means: 14 bit linear raw without limitations.

Quote: "The camera isn't even breaking a sweat.."

So, pretty disappointing for those who bought the first BMC, and this might even make you question buying the next BMC since reports are talking about you being able to do even 2.5k raw with the 5D (even higher... but that comes with frame drops etc.

^ Painful, no matter how you try to fight it.

For optimal image quality, you have to work with the DNGs directly in AE (Resolve might be an alternative, but I haven't tested it).

With AE CS5 on an intel 3470 with plenty of RAM, an SSD drive and a decent nvidia card (I think it was a GT450), playback will be around 1.5fps. So, nearly unbearable.

DNG is not a video codec. It is in essence a digital negative. The first step in most raw workflows is to do a onelight exposure, color and gamma corrected transcode to a video codec for editing.

The big advantage of shooting raw is the range of highlight and shadow values you can recover in the transcode to get a richer more nuanced image. Information that would be lost if shot with a video codec original. But as with a film negative, you have to do the " lab" work and print it first.

The pictures some of you picked are from a gh3 the ones you disliked are from 5d mkiii. Can a gh3 compete with a 5d with raw on ML? If not, is the workflow for 5d raw going to be insane?

RatLab. That's my point. If Raw isn't usable to average person or pro then it's useless for us?

looks like there is GREAT variance in gh3 output on sample videos. I love the full frame look but I guess speed booster will make that possible when it is released? I love canon color. Maybe a gh3 hack will address this. NeatVideo can fix much of the high ISO and noise problems?

Did I convince myself that the 5d is good only for low light and stills and a gh3 is the best current hybrid?

Dude it's good that you're putting a lot of thought into this purchase but you're overthinking this. All 3 of the videos I showed you from the 3 cameras looked good right? So just pick one up and shoot and have fun. RAW is pretty crazy, you're talking 15min recording on a $300 64Gb card plus lots of computing power and a stack of hard disks.

I think the solution for those that want proper RAW footage is to buy the GH3 for general production work, and also buy a Blackmagic Pocket Cine Camera for high-dynamic range/RAW work. Both cameras can use the same lenses and take advantage of AF and OIS. And currently buying both of these m4/3 cameras is more than $1,000 less than buying one 5D Mk3.

Unless you really need full frame RAW, which if you were considering the 5D before the ML RAW Hack I assume you don't, I say get the GH3. I'm enjoying using mine a hell of a lot more than I ever liked using my 7D. Functionality, the GH3 wins hands down. Image wise, I prefer it to any Canon DSLR. The 1080p50 @ 50Mbs MOV codec looks great. The icing on the cake will be when the speedbooster for MFT is released.

And like I said earlier on, for the price of a 5DIII body you can get a GH3, BMPCC and speedbooster and a few used Nikkor lenses. If claims are true, the BMPCC still has over a stop more dynamic range in RAW than the 5DIII in RAW. It's still a no brainer for me.

For anyone that says "but it's not full frame" I say 'how many films made in the last 100 years were shot on full frame other than iMax?' If you cant shoot a film now without a stills full frame sensor then you are doing something wrong.

If you can afford it along with a Mac Pro or Hackintosh for the workflow, the 5DIII is simply a no-brainer.

I would take a GH3 over a 5D2 or 7D any day though. Although the sharpness and onboard codecs are fantastic, there is something camcorder-ish about the footage that cannot be denied.

Yes, that exactly what I said to myself when I saw Shane Carruth's "Upsteam Color" ( shot on a GH2 camera ) on the big screen of a sold out theater on Saturday night. :-)

BoxOffice Mojo : Upstream Color $401,200 as of May 12th

...You are deluding yourself if you think any camera has magical built-in "cinematic" goodness.

The Alexa does...but obviously that's not even in the same class as DSLRs. There's something camcorderish about most of the 5D raw videos I'm seeing...just a lot less camcorderish-ness than I see with the GH3!

I think that Bruce Logan short on the GH3 (Genesis) looks amazing, but most of us folks here on DVXuser A. work with shoestring budgets B. aren't experienced enough to light like he does C. suck

We need to avoid camcorder look as much as we can!
