5d or GH3

I mentioned that odd looking effect in the grass as well. Compared to the regular internal codec version of the video, the DR does look considerably improved- but as of now, even the Pro Res stuff from the pocket cinema camera looks much better to me...esp considering how expensive the storage for the ML Raw 5D3 is going to be.

The code the guy shot with is only a few hours new so you have to expect a few pixels might be a bit mixed up, but the screen on the door looks to be the culprit along with the rolling shutter. The 2 second burst DNG RAW files I've shot look perfect, every bit as good as the BMCC footage I've seen, just without the aliasing.

I think people really underestimate the BMCC in low light. The camera is native 800 iso. Low light comparison begins at 4:30

http://vimeo.com/49875510

Yeah, they do underestimate it, but at the same time it's not a fantastic low light performer, just a pretty good/decent performer. I've been able to work a bit of magic with the low light DNGs of the BMCC, but that video example I don't really classify as very low light, because there's street lights all around, store lights, car lights, etc. It's low lightish, but not extreme low light by any means. Low light scenes where there's one light available or dim lighting is the kind of low light scene when the Mark III will begin to trounce the BMCC. Just recently someone showed the difference between the Nex-5n and the BMCC shooting at night. The 5n was dramatically more light sensitive and the BMCC simply required a much faster lens to start to become acceptable, otherwise it crushed the black so that they were unrecoverable. Now, this example I mention was in an outside shot with much less light than in the video above. So, the BMCC is fine for moderately low light shots, but not the more extreme low light shots like a monitor's light being the light source. Maybe with speedbooster it will be more up for a challenge.

Can you shoot deep focus shots with such beautiful detail with your 5d Mark III............

Well, from what I've been reading the new RAW video is much much sharper than the H.264 video, so I assume so once it becomes available. Stop down the lens and you'll get deeper DOF. I was watching that video and thinking "Damn, this Gh3 looks amazing", then clicked on it and found out why...it's not the Gh3, but the BlackMagic. lol. Obviously though the BMCC will have more detail though since it shoots 2.5k. Hell, the BMCC in a test against the Alexa and Red Epic showed to be much sharper than both, because it has no OLPF

A little off topic but I'm always let down by the 1080p images on YouTube. Vimeo's 1080p looks much nicer. Either way, as I said, judging a cameras RAW capability via a YouTube is a bit ridiculous. I hope the 5D RAW meets the expectations of those who need it. It might be insentive for Vitaly to try something similar with the GH3. I'm loving the RAW stills the GH3 is producing and while I would rarely need the feature having the option would be nice.

You are 100% right vtwiz, it is kind of silly judging the raw for ultimate quality, but at the same time...we can compare like for like. I've seen GH3 and BMCC footage that is just flat WOW. None of the 5DMK3 videos or silent raw stills that have been shown look better or even as good as the post sharpened stuff I've seen others do with the internal codec. People keep saying it's great, but the footage has yet to be shown to back it up. It's early, so the jury is still out...but I can't help but think the feed to the live view they are using is compromised somehow, because the footage thus far just looks wonky.

True.

While RAW video is nice, for the price of the 5DIII I can get a m43 camera that shoots very detailed 1080p50 and nice RAW video that I would be confident using in the field without a hack. Add the Speedbooster to the mix and this m43 camera becomes a S35 camera with 1080p50 and RAW plus my Nikon primes become a stop faster and I can use great cine lenses with ease.

Or should I say both cameras. GH3 + BM Pocket Cam + Speedbooster. Killer combination, cheaper and lighter than 5D, Full Frame with the speed booster (in cinema terms), RAW and 1080p60 AND I get TWO cameras that can share all their lenses. So, in comparing a $1200 GH3 to a $3500 5DIII you could say that for $1200 less than the 5DIII you get a camera that does do RAW video.

Honestly, I shoot a 5D MK III at work and I own a GH3. I personally prefer the GH3, which is why I picked it up after using a 5D. A weird thing that bothered me about the 5D was its grain structure, even correctly exposed. It's not a big and only visible when I look at 200% when grading. It's just not my preference. It's not a big deal to begin with, but its probably (looks-wise) what bothers me about the 5D. It was something that bothered me about my old 60D.

The big thing for me is usability in every aspect. A big thing for me is trying to the the camera for 100% of its function. Yeah, I bought the GH3 for video. But it is first a stills camera, and so I looked into that as well. Lugging around a 5D is okay, but after a GH3, for photography the MFT system is awesome. It's small and light. Underratedly light. It's why I got rid of all my Contax/Zeiss glass for MFT equivalents. Taking photos, both for work and fun is a completely different experience for MFT and traditional DSLR. It takes a while to get use to both, but I love shooting photos off the GH3.

Skin tones are a moot point. If you don't like the skin tones, fix them. I don't think skin tones are that great from any camera out of the box. Everything needs a slight grade.

For general purpose durability, both feel pretty tough. Especially the 5D. Wouldn't be afraid to take it into a wet jungle.

Battery life on the Gh3 is awesome. Can survive on battery for a week with light daily use.

I'm a film school student, so money was an issue. Sold all my APS Canon gear to get the GH3. Overall cost is much lower for MFT. My general use falls on having a 24mm, 50mm, and 85mm for everything (freelance, films i've shot, projects with friends, etc).

Canon 5D + 24mm,50mm,85mm = Around $4899 New
Panasonic GH3 +24mm,50mm,85mm Equiv = Around $2999 New
(I'm the biggest used gear advocate, so that's not exact but its an estimation)

Going to work with a GH3, they don't take the work seriously. If I was trying to get a freelance job and they saw my GH3 prior to shoots, I'd lose some of my work. It's okay, but a consideration. Obviously wow people with the stuff you shoot.

I think the pixel-peeping comment stuck out to me. I don't pixel peep for quality, just do it for post. I can't tell you which is better at 200% out of camera. If you're into that, by all means go for it. I think you just have to be ready for some shooting at f/5.6 on a tripod with no motion whatsoever, otherwise your pixels won't be the best pixels and it'l be a pointless comparison.

Here's one of the things I shot on the GH3 and my P/L 25mm 1.4 (50mm equiv is my favorite FOV).

Shoot I did for a buddy. Wasn't able to get really into it to grade, but there's a decent amount of (different colored skin) skin tones and aside form contrast adjustment, its what you get out of camera. Take it for what you will. I might recut it with grading to have it, but it's a decent show of an out of camera look. This video was a less than one-day turnaround because my friend's not the most on point and we did it the day before it was due.

Everything above me is opinion, especially mine. Honestly, walk into samys, bring a memory card, try all the lenses you want on the 5D you want. Repeat for the GH3. Compare. Go a step further. Rent them for a day. Whatever gear you own will be the gear at your disposal when a major shoot comes and you have one day to prep. Take the time to figure it out FOR YOURSELF then buy. All you can do.

I agree that most of the stuff posted looks bad but what I'm seeing out of the MK3 looks fantastic, I shoot a lot of RAW stills so I know the difference and I'm getting the RAW still quality. I can't go back to H.264 but I'm shooting features so I really need the extra quality that isn't necessary for a lot of things. When I get my 1066x card in a couple of weeks I'll shoot some test scenes for my feature RAW (if it isn't too buggy).

The only thing wonky I've seen is some motion blur but I think it's because I'm not familiar with AE.

I'm guessing 600D sales will go through the roof even more so onve they port it over! A $350 S35mm RAW video camera............Nice!

Amazing 5D Raw footage!

I have a few questions:

1. When ML perfects this for the 5D MK III will the file sizes still be so large? I'm just a hobbyist and don't have expensive computers and storage, trying to convert Terabytes of footage is insane!

2. Will shooting 5D raw be equal to GH3 resolution or surpass it?

3. Can the GH3 noise at high ISO be comparable to a 5D if one were to use NeatVideo? Sometimes I like to shoot indoors, at night with friends etc. Noise makes me want to punch a small child in the neck.

4. Are cameras like the Red Epic and Arria Alexa more easily copied by a GH3 or a 5D3?

Thanks :)

PS HeyRobert your GH3 footage looks great and does not look like the "camcorder" look I hate out of other footage...any reasons why?

And this is only good if you want to deal with the RAW workflow. If not, GH3 is still a better overall Cam IMHO.
