5d or 7d to buy and which is native 24p?

Hey all

so i have a good friend who wants to buy a 5d

Its the beginning of April 2010

the big question is has the camera come around to being 24p Native?

I realize there is a firmware update and everyone is saying yeah it is? But is it really as good as the 7d's 24p Native mode?

that is my question?

So basically when a new 5d mark 2 ships from Cannon is it coming out of the box with 24p native like a 7d? If not and you have to do the firmware update what are the disadvantages if there are any and why isn't Cannon shipping the cameras with 24p native in them?

I have heard philip bloom say that the conversion from 30p to 24p causes a slight slow down and if you aren't doing sync sound you are fine. My question is has the 5d become a 24p native camera?

anyone have the answer?

It is now real 23.98 (24) just like the 7D.

The new 5D's are shipping with the new 2.04 firmware, the only reason you might still get one with the old firmware is that 2.04 hasn't been out long, and so there are certainly still stock in stores with older firmware.

You have to understand that what Philip Bloom is saying is that the slow down is because 24 isn't really 24, it's 23.98. Actually the new firmware on the 5D changes 30 as well, it will no longer be 30, it will be 29.97. This is what you WANT. When the 5D came out, it used true 30fps, which is not a very good standard. Broadcast in the US uses 29.97 and 23.98. This is all highly technical, but just don't be afraid of them, this is a blessing that the camera now performs correctly, with framerates of 23.98, 25 and 29.97 just like the 7D.

The 7D adds a 60 (actually 59.98) running at 60fps in 720p, that the 5D can't do (it's processor isn't fast enough and the chip would probably overheat too).

But yes, the answer is, the 5D Mark II is now a TRUE 24fps native camera with the new firmware, and all new 5D's made will be made with this firmware, so there are no downsides, and don't be afraid of it.

If video is all you care about then just get the Rebel T2i, not even a 7D of 5D.

If your friend cares a lot about photography and will make use of the full-frame sensor, then go ahead and buy the 5D. But I say again... if you only care about video it will be a worthless purchase to get a 5DM2 over a 7D or T2i.

Without offering any further explanation or defense and never visiting this thread again I will say:

T2i < 7D < 5D < GH1 < Real video camera < Real video camera with lens adaptor.

I think you are wrong with your T2i recommend for video only.

I care about the best overall video image and ability.

If the 5d can do 24p native for video. Then hands down it would be the camera of choice for video (not to mention stills, but forget stills for now).

The 5d has a full frame sensor and a 21 megapixel chip compared to an 18 megapixel 1.6 crop sensor in the 7d and rebel 2ti.

Watch this shoot out by zacuto for the cameras.

I would go this order if you are a real video shooter:

5d, 7d, 2ti

because I am not just looking for the most basic of video devices but one that can give me the best image, performance, capability, and durability.

I think the Rebel 2ti is awesome but it has a few draw backs compared to the 7d that actually would make me pick the 7d. I care about the build quality of the body. I like the fact that the 7d can do the Kalvin wheel for color correction which I think is actually important. So I think you are off on your recommend.

If the 5d can do 24p Native it is the closest thing to 35mm to the red out there.

cheers,

Ronster
ps to Primaural...your analysis was excellent. Thank you for the indepth answer.

I've heard rumors of a 7D MKII. I'd cry if there was an announcement for it, seeing as how I JUST bought my 7D.

I think that would be a little fast seeing how they just came out in like September.

I would imagine at least a year wait

just my thought on it

any word on a 5d mark 3?

You can check www.canonrumors.com for 5D Mark III rumors. I don't know if it is worth waiting for the next new thing to come out. You'll always be waiting because there is probably going to be something new a shiny coming out even 9 months at this rate.

Especially now that DSLR's have made their way into the video market. It's blown open a new door in budget/independent filmmaking.

Apparently the t2i overheats so fast that it is barely useable. That combined with the huge build quality difference, the fact that the 7d can output an almost HD signal to a monitor while recording (t2i does SD only), and plus the fact that you have to use the LCD and click a few times in order to switch aperture and ss makes me think the 7d is a better option.

I was so hyped about the t2i. It's still cool. Will I be selling my 5d for it? No. Will I sell my 5d and get a 7d? I think I might at this point. I want that 60p, hd out, and extra $ from selling.

I highly doubt the 5D III is anywhere close to being released. It took years for canon to release the mark II since the first 5D was realeased. On top of this most of their sales come from still photographers and there really hasn't been a a demand for a new model just yet..heck the original 5D is still an amazing camera by today's DSLR standards.

I don't agree with putting the GH1 above the 5D, but that's probably just taste.

I think this equation is only applicable, though, if "real video camera" is defined as, say, an EX1, because the amount of lightloss a "real" video camera endures at the hands of an adapter (not to mention the "real" video camera may already have a much smaller sensor size than the 5D resulting in poor low-light performance before the adapter is even attached), makes it being a competitive device against the DSLRs a little shaky, IMO.

For instance, I would not personally put an HV30 over the 7D, 5D or GH1.
