5d mkiii moire example

I was horrified until I changed the resolution settings... ...but then it looked quite good. Not perfect, but good.

Hey, thanks for doing this, dtwdit! It helps at least see the characteristics of what type of aliasing and rainbow patterns there may be (and surprisingly mild on the rainbows!)

I especially like how you shot the res chart with motion in it, instead of a (pointless) static shot. However, for the pedantic among us, if you still have the chance, could you reshoot it with the chart framed to the arrows? As it is, you're wider on the chart than necessary, which makes the res numbers inaccurate. If you could reframe it so that the bowtie arrows are exactly on the edges of the frame, that'd provide a bit more useful information.

In any case, thanks for taking the time to post & share!

Hey Barry, how do you feel about the mk3? I know you're not much of a fan of the 7D and 5D mk2 so I just wanted to see what your opinion of the mk3 was

Haven't been interested at all. I figure with their forthcoming DSLR "C" product, the emphasis on quality in that form factor won't really be in the 5D/7D line anymore. But, yeah, overall it's been something I haven't bothered keeping track of.

Understood. I kind figured the mk3 would end up the way that it did, slightly better than the mk2 due to the "C" product being announced and developed. Either way I bought the mk3, I'm just a Canon fan and really wanted my own personal FF camera anyway. The next purchase very well may be a Scarlet but I'm not sure yet. Do you have any views on Scarlet or have you been off grid on it? Forgive me for asking my man, I haven't been on the board in a while and have always respected your opinions. Heck, I still own four of your books, the first one came with my DVX back in 05 lol

Hey, that's as good a reason as any, and if you really want FF, it's the best choice for it, so yeah, you go, and make something awesome with it and show it around here, willya?

Scarlet? That was quite a ride. Initially I thought Red had blown everyone totally out of the water, but now, as the dust settles, I dunno. Sixteen grand for a shooting kit, if you're gonna go that far why not get an Epic, y'know? I dunno, on the one hand it looks brilliant, on the other it looks like another trek down firmware update lane, waiting for it to get all sorted out, and then -- will it still look like "all that" by the time it's all sorted out? Things are moving fast and furious already, with the F3 and C300, the FS100 and AF100, now the Digital Bolex and the DSLR C, and Mitch Gross hinting at at least three, if not four, surprise cameras all debuting at NAB.

The day the Scarlet was announced, I was 99% of the way towards putting down a deposit on it, it was really only the Canon mount that stopped me (I have gobs of PL and ZF glass, but not a single Canon lens), and the price for a PL mount, and more batteries, and everything... it was gonna be over $20k by the time I was done. Basically my Red One all over again, and I'd already done that and sold it, so I decided to take a breather on the Scarlet. The C300 I initially dismissed as reheated tech, but then it started looking really good and I actually put a deposit down on one, but again, the lens mount situation stopped me, and now I'm pretty glad it did, because of what we may see two or three weeks away. At least, that's what people who "know" keep telling me...

But Barry, could you not agree that the 5dMk3 is the right direction for the as I call it "multimedia" one solution camera guy. One that shoots gorgeous stills and is moving towards video. Nevermind the FF, just the concept and the fact that they have really curbed its drawbacks? Moire, aliasing, and the ability to monitor sound.

LOL, my thoughts exactly on the Scarlet! When announced, I was in. When it materialized, I was in but broke! When I finally put the cash together, meh...... I dunno, I hope this year is something special with cameras. I mean really special! I don't care which company does it, I just want it done lol. Great camera, reasonably priced at a more than you can ask for type of deal. We'll see though. Anyway, thanks man. Glad to see you're still around!

Oh also, are you on Twitter?

It's certainly better than it was. And for who it was designed for, photojournalists who shoot stills and occasionally need to shoot video, it seems well suited to that task. And applause to them for recognizing and addressing the shortcomings it had in video.

But for someone who's intending to shoot video, certainly you would agree that there are many better choices? As I get older, I'm less and less inclined to try to shoehorn one product into another product's domain. In the past I've managed to unscrew screws using a chisel, and I've been able to tighten tripod screws with a quarter, but nowadays I really do just prefer using a screwdriver for those tasks, it's so infinitely better that it's silly to use workarounds.

Just my take though.

LOL. Quarters and screwdrivers. Love it! In fact, I'm stealing it from you! Thanks Master Barry!
Now, can you agree that with the 5d series that your world of screwdrivers is better off and more affordable because of it??????

I can resize and reshoot it but I'm booked the next couple of days. So it will be at least until Friday before I get a chance again. I know it was a bit wide, the "test" if you will was purely for my own amazement but after seeing the results I thought it might be interesting to other people too. Compared to the 7D or 5D(and that really is all I wanted to compare it to) it is improved.

Glad to be a part of this community.

Not really if you are an MK II owner and have invested in all the additional gear and glasses. Then there is no other camera out there that gives you an "upgrade" for 3.500$ (Plus the nice little b-cam that would become your MKII)

But, when the MK II came out, there were no alternatives. I admit that has changed a lot and someone who jumps the train now might choose a different tool. (Next who should come out with something extraordinary is Panasonic. They have the sensor, the codec and soon a set of fast x-lenses geared towards video.)
