Hello everyone, my name is Patrik and I'm kind of new to the forums, been checking it out for a while and you guys seem to know what you're talking about, so I have a question:

I decided that it's time for a new camera. My main use of said camera will be filming. I want to know if I should get the T2i or the 5D mk2.

Of course, the 5D is a better camera in many ways, but is the T2i more bang for the buck? I'm kind of new to this so maybe I should go for the T2i and upgrade further down the road? Focus on more equipment on the side instead or something..

Tell me what you think :)

there are plenty of info these cameras here do a search and also provide more info about what you are doing with the camera that would be somewhat helpful.

My thoughts are if you have the scratch go with the 5d if you don't the t2i will work until something better comes out at a lower price point.

If you have the money to get the camera and a few nice lenses go with the 5D. the T2i is a great camera though, especially for the money. (I have the 7D & T2i) You might also want to look into the Panasonic GH1 (with the hack) Amazing camera, cheap price, and with the hack, It is a freakin' monster. But if you are going the DSLR route for sure, You can't go wrong the 5D, 7D, T2i, or GH1 as long as you know EXACTLY what you're getting into and are able to deal with the workarounds. Good luck.

I went with the T2i as my first DSLR for a few reasons. First, the image quality is excellent for the price and it seems to rival the 7D at about half the cost. Second, I knew that I would have to buy a slew of accessories if I was ever going to be usable for any real video production, like a viewfinder, matte box, filters, rails, a follow focus, audio solution, etc. So, my rationale was get the most bang for the buck and have some $$$ left over for the other goodies.

The DSLR market is in a state of flux, and the next generation will be something to see. Buy the T2i and start assembling a nice collection of lenses/accessories and then save your money for a nicer model coming out of the next generation of DSLRs.

Personally, I'll wait for the next generation.

With this new GH1 hack, I'm surprised about what's going on with these dslrs. The next cameras will probably be worth the wait.

Yeah after reading your comments, I think that the T2i will suit my needs well, and then I'll have some cash over for lenses and/or other equipment.

Thanks for helping out guys!

What's this GH1 hack?

+1

I bought my 550D as a learning tool, knowing (Hoping more like!) that there would be at least one more round of vDSLR improvements before the video side took flight to "real" camcorders. Also the diferance in cost between that and a 5DII allowed my to buy a good-ish tripod.

If you can actually buy a 5D MKII then consider this: the resale value will hold for QUITE a while, and when you do go to get rid of it, you're going to get more of your investment back than you would if you were to sell a t2i.

So long as you keep the shutter actuation count down and the camera clean, your trade up to the next new thing will be cheaper.

t2i won't hold much value at all.

If I were in the market right now it would be between Gh1 and 5D.

GH1 for the hack and ongoing development which has elevated it beyond other offerings, 5D for the larger sensor and resale value.

Bro, I went with a T2i myself...counting the days til it arrives. Go buy it from Newegg, if it isn't out of stock yet. They'll ship you a 250G external hard drive..all of it total of 850$

I was gonna get a 7D, but then I did some research and T2i isn't any different than 7D when shooting video. They are different though when taking pictures though. So if you're gonna be shooting JUST video go with the T2i and use the extra cash for lenses and other equipment. That's what im doing
