5D MK II with Panasonic BT-LH900a 8.4" HD monitor ?

I want to monitor the 5D image in HD in order to get a better idea of focus and exposure (the 5D monitor isn't very helpful).

The Panasonic HD monitor has HD-SDI in as well as component. I know AJA makes a convertor called the HA5 which converts HDMI to HD-SDI (but it's like 500$) and I'm not sure I want to make the investment as I don't know how much I will actually use it.

I already own the panasonic 8.4" monitor .

what other options do I have ? Other convertors? Workarounds? Is there such thing as HDMI to component ?

thanks,
Michael

Hi Michael,

I just bought and have used the BlackMagic HDMI to SDI Mini Converter.

Works wonderfully on my LH-900 as well as my Panasonic 17" HD monitor too.

And unlike the AJA, they don't charge you extra for the power supply.

$474 @ B&H link.

The HD Fury II ($139 from Monoprice.com) converts HDMI to component. I'm using it with a 7D going to a Panasonic BT-LH80W monitor and it works fine. The 7D even supplies the power on the HDMI line that the HD Fury II needs. I don't know for absolute certain that the 5D supplies the power also, but I'm guessing it probably does.

thank you : )

Hi Barry, I would love your advice, as I read your post on dvinfo from 2nd Nov which says that the signal intensity drops after a while. However in your more recent post here you don't mention this, did you find a way to avoid the problem with the 7D? Many thanks, Sam

Dvinfo:
Update - my 7D does power the HD Fury II, but -- not enough. It works for a little while, and then it looks like the intensity of the signal drops about 10-15%. I've taken to using the HD Fury's power supply even with the 7D. Even though the 7D does supply HDMI power, I don't think it's enough to make the system work properly.

Sorry Barry, I see that there is a more recent thread on this issue, I only saw that after posting my above message.

However I do have one question: you mention that the intensity drops 10-15% after a little while of using the HD fury without a power supply.

If you unplugged the hd fury and then plugged in again does the signal start again at the full 100%? The reason that I ask this, is that maybe exposure could be judged immediately after plugging in, and then the monitor could then continue to be used for judging focus thereafter? Thanks!

I must admit, I've been guilty in using a cheap portable DVD player for my remote viewing needs from the d90... lol. It's enough to guage framing and performance anyway.

These expensive HD screens are abit off the top for any of my personal projects. Do you guys mainly buy them for corporate/production company work?

I use a ERG EV-85, a not very well known monitor, but it produces a very accurate and useable image. However it only has component input as it is 3 years old, hence the questions on hdmi to component.

So do most monitors not have HDMI inputs? Why would you buy one without it? I was hoping most HD monitors did have HDMI ins.

EDIT: And wouldn't converting HDMI to component (using the method Barry Green was talking about) make it SD?

Are you using this on a Canon 5D mkII? I cannot get this BM converter to work with the Panny BT-LH80 or the LH1700 on a 5D during recording. Works fine during preview.

Anybody have any ideas... Barry?
