5D MK II Music Video

Here's a music video shot on the 5d.

The concept was kind of highlighting some music video stereotypes whilst also making a sweet video for the directors friend as an album debut.
It was my first time working with the 5D and i really enjoyed it

dvx has answered alot of my questions so i thought i'd show something

tell me what you think

Nice job but (isn't there always),

- With the 5D2 you should have used shallow Depth of View in more shots
- The extras were all non Pros I know but you should have had faster cuts because it is obvious the extras make it look cheesy with their expressions and movement (or lack of)
- for the type of music I would have used some more effects.

I want to get 5D3's for music videos so this interests me.

Ugh... Why?? because your camera can, you should? Almost every shot in this video is staged so there's a background and/or foreground element that the director or DP wanted the audience to be able to see. They chose NOT to focus on one guy, and that's what adds interest to the entire party scene, and frankly, the entire video. That ultra shallow depth of field has it's place, but it's WAY overused with these cameras, and it's few and far in between. I think this video did a great job with choosing the best f-stop to fit the scene

Well yes and no.

I know they are called Music "Videos" but in their case it is one forum outside Film where you should go for depth of field to add a more artsy look to it.
Watch any Music Video and see what I am talking about.
Video Cameras are great for documentry type shooting but for Music videos you are limited.

Watch a lot of music videos and movies ...shallow depth of field is used a lot more than you think.
Also take a photo with a good digital compact camera and then take the same photo with an slr and ask people which is the better photo.....bet the slr manual depth of field wins hands down.
So I disagree with you but hey.....to each their own.

I agree with Ryan for the most part. It shouldn't matter what f-stop he chose. If the element of the video was just on the rapper, then yeah an f-stop of 1.8 would be wonderful. In this video, he was capturing the element of the people and the atmosphere. Therefore, using a shallow DOF isn't always needed. Also, having a 5d Mkii doesn't mean he has to use a wide aperture. It depends on the lens's which were used.

Overall though, I thought you did a great job with the video. Nice use of scenery/props. I thought you definitely captured that party scene feel. What equipment did you use if you don't mind me asking? Dollies, tripods, etc.

Crazy I know people in this video. Anyway - I thought you did a great job - slightly cheesy so maybe faster cuts in certain scenes would have been better. I agree with Ryan on selecting the best f stop to fit the scene. You don't always have to shoot wide open. The video is professional though. I've recently bought a 5D2 and find myself switching back to my 550D to capture 720 @ 60FPS footage though..I think a little slow motion would have done this video justice. Well done.
