5d mark iii vs c100: pls give your valuable advice

hi all,

i have few questions for which i need your advice.

firstly on 5d mark iii, in a low light condition, if i am using 50mm @ f1.8 the dof would be very shallow. is it possible to have deep dof @f1.8? correct me if i am wrong, if i want deep dof, i need to stop down my lens to say f2.8 or f3, but this will make the video look dark, so i will have to increase the iso, right? what i want is a wide shot at 50mm but want everything in focus.

second, which camera would be good for chroma keying (green screen)? will mark iii be good for keying or canon c100. which codec would be good? h264 of mark iii or avchd of c100?

And lastly, i mostly do documentaries and corporate videos. My work is not going to be featured on very big screen. for me i am planning to go for 5d mark iii. but with big guns coming out like BMC, is investing in 5d mark iii a good choice right now? i don't have big setup to edit 2K or 4K so i am considering mark iii. also i was wondering if the price of c100 would come down in near future, would it be good to go for c100 instead of mark iii. but c100 uses avchd codec. which codec is easy to edit? i edit in premiere pro.

can mark iii's footage be sharpened in post to get close to c100? i hope i am not too late to go dslr route now. c100 looks to be good, but it very expensive rite now.

sorry for such a long post, but your answers will help me a lot.

regards,

1. add light. stop down, use hyperfocal distance.

2. You need to use external recorder to get 8bit 422.

3. C100 is more suitable for you based on your needs. You can pair it up with external recorder to get very good result.

4. No, C100 is much sharper than 5D3.

5. There is currently a $1000 rebate on C100.

^ That

Plus: if you wan't deep DoF, f/2.8 on full frame won't cut it: that's still pretty shallow!
For example, with a 50mm set at f/2.8 and a distance to subject of 2.5m, you get a medium shot with a DoF of just 35cm of DoF!
http://www.similaar.com/foto/dof/dof.php?f_x=1&f_r=1.77&f_mm=50&f_f=2.8&f_d=2.5
You need to go to f/8 to take the DoF to 1m:
http://www.similaar.com/foto/dof/dof.php?f_x=1&f_r=1.77&f_mm=50&f_f=8&f_d=2.5

OTOH, if you were shooting with a BMC (2.3x crop factor) and a 21mm lens (equivalent FoV to the previous example), you'd have 89cm of DoF at f/2.8, and 3.2m at f/8

thanks marvin and samuel for your inputs. looks like c100 is the way to go for my work but its very expensive.

i am coming from a traditional video camera background. presently i use canon xh a1s camera for my work (it's ancient according to the current standards).

But i want to upgrade so was wondering for mark iii and than wanted to skip mark iii and directly jump to c100. i also don't have lens collection so i will also have to invest in lenses. All this adds a great punch to my budget if i go with c100. but it looks like i will have to go for mark iii only. but will wait for couple of weeks to see if prices on c100 will drop since the announcement of BMC.

do you think the prices will drop?

5D is good if you want the full frame look. If you don't care about that, you might consider the GH3. In my eyes it's much sharper and the cost is much cheaper if you focus only on video. If I had money I'd pair a C100 and GH3.

i saw couple of 5d mark iii vs c100 comparisons on youtube, where the footage of c100 is very sharp compared to 5d markiii. but almost all the comparisons shows both the camera stacked up with each other at same settings i.e both the cameras are shown with same iso, shutter speed etc.

in such scenario it's obvious that both the camera will show different results. in fact what i think should be done is to try to get one camera i.e 5d to try to match the footage of c100.

is it possible to make 5d come closer to c100 at different settings?

Most vs videos does not indicate where the focus is set and due to the very shallow dof on full frame cameras compared to cropped sensor cameras the vs halts and can't be taken to serious when it comes to sharpness.
